Default MSD6a in S2 report

Put an MSD6A ignition unit in my S2 about two months ago. Apart from the predictable increase in torque in the lower rev ranges (I had a 6A unit in a 2.5 NA when I lived in the US), I've been keeping track of fuel consumption figures.

Result: 7% saving in fuel costs.

Not bad for a "go faster" mod! (Glad I didn't go for a performance chip...)

Just thought I'd report if anyone was thinking of this sort of thing.

Mark-

I did not notice any change in mpg when I did this mod, then again I think my right foot got heaveier after I did it.

BTW what spark plug gap did you end up ussing??

Cheers,

Cheers,
The decreased fuel consumption may be at least partly because my driving has changed a bit because of the extra torque; I notice sometimes I'll be in 4th where I used to like being in 3rd, for example. Because it's a bit more responsive, I'm guessing I might be a little more light-footed, if anything. Not really a conscious thing, though.

For plugs, I stuck with stock copper Bosch WR 5 DC. I just used the factory spec gap as well.

That would probably do it, thanks for clarifying.

I stuck with the Bosch copper plug too, though I upped the gap to something like 0.060" from the factory 0.032". This was per info from MSD about getting the max benefit from the system. I think it helped even more. Easy enough to do and easy to reverse if you don't like it.

Best to you,

Thanks for this; I'll try it and see if I notice a difference.

Mine has built in switched rev limits for launch control and flat foot shifting. (Sweet with a turbo!)

I will be selling the whole setup soon when Vitesse gets wasted spark out.

You need to use the MSD coil as well. My setup is all plug and play for a 944.

Yes, if you read my first post you'll see mine is an S2. I'd previously also installed one of these on a 2.5L NA. Exactly the same set-up.

You'll need the MSD6A ignition box or equivalent, an upgraded coil (e.g. MSD Blaster 2), and upgraded (at least 8mm insulation) ignition wires (e.g. Magnecor 8.5mm).

Skip Grehan at Paragon has put together a great little write-up on how to install these:

http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index...x_v2&id=87&c=4

I've used it twice now. Thanks Skip!

Mark-

One other question. Do you have the MSD firmly attached near the battery? I have used zip ties to secure mine to where the vac canister used to go, similar in set up to what Skip did. Do you have a better solution?

I did find a good solution, but for RHD cars only, I'm afraid. On the RHD drive cars, they had to move the battery to the back of the car so they could get the steering column over to the RHS. This left a nice big (relatively) empty spot for the MSD unit to go.

It's good to place these units where they're not going to get too hot -- although they are supposed to handle engine bay temps comfortably, I've heard anecdotally that some people have experienced heat related problems with these units. Used some self tappers to hold it in place. I've had no problems with this position so far.
