In closing out this thread I wanted to include a photo in case there are any "S" owners that need to do an "head-on" valve spring replacement. I searched high and low for a tool to no avail. I ended up making something that got the job done for under $5.00.
I used a couple of "L" brackets from Home Depot and a piece of angle iron. I basically cut one of the angle brackets to make kind of foot that would compress the top of the spring down-allowing the valve stem to pass, while securing the other angle bracket to the head with a bolt. The bar gives you leverage to either push or pull to compress the spring and can be configured to do any spring on the head. All the spring compressioin tools that I have seen will not work on the "S" head. My car is back together and runs fine.
