Default $185 too much?

Long story short, I had to take my 951 to a local garage to have my brakelines replaced. They quoted me 2-hours, which I know is BS. I didn't stand there with a stop watch, but come on! So they replaced all four lines, flushed the system, put in new fluid and bleed the lines. Did I mention I provided the new SS lines? Does that sound reasonable? This is not a Porsche garage, just a local garage that I like.

the time estimate is reasonable; and if a good shop their labor rate probably puts that money right in line. The shop I go to when I need a pro charges $90/hr. You also have to account for the cost of new fluid, disposing of the old, and other little things.

Seems reasonable if you could not do it yourself.(as mentioned above plus hassle of getting under there and cussing at the clips etc....

But unreasonable if you could

yeah...those damn clips... argh...

IMHO, that sounds reasonable... not to mention without a lift, that job becomes more painful than you'd ever imagine... not to mention the fun of bleeding the system afterward (it really is fun... I meant that ) it's not a tough or long job, but if I didn't do it myself, I'd happily pay that.

Did they bleed the clutch?
They could have taken a lot longer than 2 hours if they did, lol.
If you had the clutch bled, take it as a blessing that you simply paid them to do it, instead of spending hours cursing about that 'damn thing'.

185 for the lines and installing them? Sounds fine to me. There rear lines are a major pain to do.

2 hours is the book time for brake lines, and is very reasonable considering they have to flush the brakes, etc. If it takes them an hour, you still get charged 2, that is how shops work. Shops do this, because there are always cars that end up taking twice as long due to rusty parts, etc, of which they still only charge book time.

Yes, that is a reasonable price.

Who comes up with "book time." Is there some skunkworks somewhere where a group of guys do each piece of labor and say "It took us 3.5hrs, so someone who knows what they are doing can do it in about two. Lets call this a 2hr job."

I'm getting ready to do mine this week. Do you guys remember the wrench sizes?

Thanks,
Tom

Maybe it wasn't such a great price. I drove it 2-miles home and I get smoke billowing out of under the drivers side of the hood. Pop the hood and what do I see? It appears they spilled brake fluid all over the turbo down pipe. G.D. is smells like crap when it gets hot. How flamable is brake fluid?

ewww... no fun. at least it's just spilled... from my experiences of brake fluid spraying on exhaust, it just smokes a lot... and smells bad... However, that was on an NA... I dunno about a turbo...

i usually have my mech's do a full hydraulic bleed - brakes and clutch.
new front brake hoses, flush with solvent, fill and bleed about $150 bucks. price is fair
