Default 930 S wheel trade

Short Version: I want to trade my 930S steering wheel (with big spline) for another 930S wheel with the small spline.

Long version:
A few months ago I bought a 930S steering wheel for my '89 S2. When I installed it, I realized that the hub spline on the wheel did not fit the smaller spline on the steering shaft that the old wheel was mounted to, but did fit the larger spline behind it. Instead of returning the wheel right away, I got caught up in the excitement of having a new toy and made it fit by shimming it so that it properly engaged the spline, and still bolted in. Before I had the shim thicknesses dialled in, I managed to gouge the back side of the rear aluminum trim ring (nothing structural, or even cosmetic since its on the backside of the wheel hub). Since this wheel has the larger hub spline, I had to remove the signal cancelation switch and horn contact. I have the pieces and will put them back together for a trade.

After a few months of no turn signal canceling or being able to honk at people, I've decided that I want the correct part. If you are looking to buy a new 930S wheel with large spline, please contact me first.

I'll ship you mine plus 50 bucks for the wheel that works.

Thanks,
Dan.

Dan, I think you just need the multiswitch for a non-airbag car. I don't understand exactly what you are talking about with the spline being bigger. Can you post up pictures of what you are talking about?

Sounds like the wheel you bought is for a 74-89 911. The splines on those cars are larger diameter than the 944s.

Three possible sources for the correct hub: - tell them you have the 930S wheel and just need the 944 hub - ~ $90 I think. I don't think you can just interchange the spline on these

AJUSA.com - Ask for the 944 hub for their wheel - I believe it is part 1729X or ATIWE part number 201729
FVDUSA.com - I believe it is their part number 100 498 172 9X1
DepartStop.com - they sell the 930S wheel on ebay; write to a guy names Dayton at dayton40@sbcglobal.net - he is a nice guy and very knowledgeable

well, here's what I've got:

Note that there are 2 spline diamaters, the rear one registers on my 930S wheel and the boss on the back butts against the shim (shown in the hole). The culprit of the gouge in the back of the wheel is the turnsignal boss that sticks up about .075". As you can see the horn ring that came with the wheel is not for this car. I already have a horn contact from an early car, just need to get the hub that fits.

I bought the wheel from DEpartstop.com, and the guy I talked to said that they were the same except one is off center for leg clearance. I'll write that guy and see if he can help. I have somewhat of an alterior motive. I found out that you can get the wheel in dark blue like the rest of my dash, and while black looks good, I think blue would really set-off the interior. If someone was ordering a black one, I could get them my black one and they could order a blue one for me.

We were just discussing in another thread the risks of buying this wheel on ebay. There are 3 different hubs that look similar but are NOT the same. I guess Dayton screwed up and caused you all kinds of grief (assuming you told him you wanted the wheel for the 944). See if he will set it right for you. If not, find out which hub you have and sell it for that car in the classifieds. Then order the proper "968 Club Sport" wheel from your Porsche Dealer (~$440) or Sunset Porsche At Cost program ~$390 - the part number will be 968.347.084.00.XXX with the last 3 digits being the color code. I don't know if you can get the wheel any longer in blue - but good luck.

Edit - your car had an airbag, correct? Could part of your problem with the horn at least be that you didn't add the horn ring from a non-airbag car? I know very little about this, but see this article: from 944s2.com: http://www.944s2.com/how-to/how-to.htm#airbag_deletion

Dan,
Off subject but do you want to go to the SilverStar P-Car Car Show/Swap Meet this Sunday? I'm going for sure if you want to ride along. 'Warning' I leave early about 7 am. I was going to sell some stuff but am too lazy to get it together in time but there are some bargains out there. I have both control stalks from a non-airbag 86 if you want to give them a try, the price is right as in 'free'

Dan;

Non-airbag 928's use the larger splined hub (air bag 928's use the 944 size spline). Maybe you can advertise it over there.
Nice wheel, too bad I'm not in the market for one.

Howard: The horn ring is part of the hub, and mine is the wrong diameter. There is a small contact that you can get from an early car (that I have) and it plugs into the Nissan Logo shaped hole above and to the right of the steering column. I have read the 944S2.com article, and its just not applicable with the spline I have. IIRC the 'club sport' wheel is differant, it doesn't have the long seam at the bottom and has multiple leather pieces on the arms, whereas the 930S wheel is a single piece leather and is dryer feeling.

Steve: Where is the show at? maybe we can swap cars for the drive down , and I'd like to take a look at those control stocks.

I just sold a 968 Club Sport wheel from a neighbor 2 days ago and have one in my car - so I know a little about them. The 968 Club Sport Wheel is a genuine 930S wheel (one piece leather with long seam and with Porsche part number as per my post above) but with the 944 hub. It would have made your life easier. It also came in various colors. You are confusing it with the 3 piece black leather aftermarket wheel sold by the catalog companies like AJUSA (which incidentally is made by the same company that makes the genuine Porsche wheel, ATIWE of Italy). The 944 hub sold for the AJUSA wheel is identical to the 944 hub that comes on the 968 Club wheel - that is why you can buy it from AJUSA and put it in your existing 930S wheel and have the same exact part as the 968 Club Sport. You can then sell the wheel to a member of this forum - there is plenty of interest - see my post: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...=226484&page=1

DEpartstop has made your life miserable. Dayton should know better.

Interesting. When I was in Ventura last weekend, there was a 911 Club Sport that had the 3 piece leather wheel, and I thought the 968 used the same. . . perhaps the car was a fake

I wouldn't say they've made life miserable, just a couple things don't work the way they should. I'll give them a call today.

You would have been more miserable if you couldn't use your horn at the right moment

Anyway - here are the 3 hubs and what they fit

Hub 1619X (ATIWE 201619)
For Porsche 911, 911 E, 911 L, 911 T, 911 S, 911 SC, 911 SC 3.0, 911 Turbo, 959 (1989 and earlier cars)

Hub 1619XA (ATIWE 2016191)
For Porsche 928

Hub 1729X (ATIWE 201729)
For Porsche 964, 924S, 944, 944 Turbo, 968

So our hub is the same as the 964 - that is the only 911 wheel that will fit our cars.

Thread resurrection time....

Any ideas what the differences are between hubs? I have a hub that I was told was for a 3.2 Carrera but it seems ever so slightly loose on the splines and the portion of the hub that is clamped under nut is roughly 6mm thinner.
