I was talking with a friend who has an 89 NA with about 85,000 miles. It was his son's car and I won't go into details but he wants to get rid of it and knows very little about 944s. He took it to the mechanic who serviced the car and found no records prior to March/01 - an oil change at 65k miles. Later in 2001, the watrer pump was repaired. Oil was changed every 7,500 miles and power steering was overhauled , full tune up and battery replacement were done in 2004 at 80,000 miles. It needs a clutch and the front steering needs work.
I see no timing belt work so I suggested that maybe the water pump was repaired rather than replaced in anticipation of needing to do that soon. No informed buyer will take it without assuming the belts and retensioner need done as well as the other stuff.
My question is what should my friend do - repair it all ( I wonder how much for the above) or let the new owner take care of that. Interrior is just ok - lotsa dash cracks. Thanks.

Needs belts, maybe a waterpump, clutch, and power steering work. With dash cracks and an "OK" interior. To be honest, in it's current state it is not worth too much, probably $1K-$1.5K at best, even being here in Ohio and being a desirable 2.7. Your friend should have at least the clutch and the belts/pump addressed, then he has some hope of fetching a little bit of cash back on it (maybe $4K if the rest of the car is nice and in good repair, with nice wheels, tires, paint, etc.

If the new owner is going to take care of the car's condition, let him know that it does need a clutch and some work on the steering. BTW, is it the rack that's the problem or other components such as control arms/balljoints on them, tie rods, and/or bushings?
The clutch wont' be cheap. Shops usually charge anywhere from $900-$1700 *mostly labor*. I would say if he's not going to put any work into it, get rid of it, but at least let the other owner know what he or she will be getting into with the car. That timing belt record is scary though with no history on it.

Could be pretty bad if the timing belt breaks while a prospective buyer is test driving it....

For your friend.
He is looking at a lot of time and money just to sell it and never recoup any of it back!
If he trys to sell it in it's current "who knows" state he will get very little for it.
I suspect that based on your brief description. He is going to get $1k-$2500 for it. And that is assuming straight body and any number of things. The only thing it has going for it is the low miles....and to be honest I doubt them!
But since you are looking for a 44 in your other post. You can get it from him for $1500-(I would aim lower) and spend your time and money to fix it and feel good about it.

Vince, sounds like a GTG is in order. This is minor refreshment for the well versed SOW gang.
You should buy it.- subtract the 3-4 grand in maintenance from the asking price and you'll be fine.
