Does anyone know if the 1988 924S had a stock wheel option if 16 inches?
I attended my firs PCA autocross today, and I gotta say, what an experience! A couple guys commented that the 15 inch wheels were very limited to tire choice, and that if 16's were a stock option, I'd have a wider tire range and still be within stock class.
Anyways, I did ok for my first autocross. Five runs. The first four, I pulled low 80 seconds and high 70's, untill the last run when I made a critical desicion. One I knew would help.
I put in a CD. SRV's "Scuttle Buttin" - loud- and shaved almost 10 seconds off my time.
I've always found it easier to do something like this while being distracted by something else, like music.
After my runs, I took a couple fun runs in another 924S. Same year, stock car, except he was running Hoosier tires.
Oh my god. Sticky. It was incredible! I hurt after being thrown back and forth!
Must do it agains oon

IMO you are better off staying with 15" wheel for autoX, since you can get the car moving faster after slow turns. Do you have the 15x6 or 15x7 wheels? If 6", I'd go to 15x7.

Yep. 15x6 PD's. 52.3 offset. AFAIK thats the only wheel offered for the 924S from the factory.
bigger wheers are slower in auto-x.

all I've ever seen was PD's unless they were swapped out by the owner.

Tire size of choice for the 7x15 is 225/50/15; speedo will be off, but for AX this is recommended (for gearing).
Also, for the 924S cars, I am pretty sure that 6" weren't offered. Starting with 1983 (1982) 944, it was 215/60/15 (23mm offseet) wheels on 7x15 tires.

Factory base offering was 195/65 15 on 15x6 phonedials. Optional was the cast sewerlids in 16x6 with a 205/55 tire. The SE had, IIRC, 15x6 front and 15x7 rear with I-don't-know-what for tires. I can give you part numbers if you like for all the offering, or at least off the set of 15x6 phones I have in the basement that came on the car when I purchased it.

Mine are original to my car, and in 1988 they are 15x6", 944.362.102.00 -- 6Jx15 ET52.3
I just happen to have a spare wheel in my livingroom..

<shrug> oh well - i guess the 7x15s were some type of sport option or something (which my cars have). i don't have those Porsche 944 books handy (i.e., Peter Morgan) that have every option in them to check details.. sewer covers indeed.

I think since the 924S was supposed to be a lesser model than the 944 as well as the fact that it is a slimmer car they stuffed the 6" wheels under the fenders. The 7" where indeed part of the SE and maybe part of a sport option package, though the PET doesn't list them as having any sport option code associated with them. They do however list that only 2 are required per vehicle, so they were obviously only placed on the rear of the car.
Oh, and they are late offset as well.

I put 15x7 phone dials on my car... ran a great tire...forgot the size, but it threw the speedometer off... any wheel you can use MUST be late offset... it's wierd. make sure they're not too wide... I think the 7 inches was pushing it..
