Default Removing balance rods...

Anyone ever done this, My car is street, and I had the balance belt removed on my old 951, I really didnt notice much difference between that and the car i have now. I think I may just remove the rods to lighten the engine a bit, and simplify the deisgn. I need to replace the motor mounts, but assuming the mounts are good, does anyone forsee intolerable shaking if i procede?

thx,
-Stellar Developer

AFAIK, the car will shake as much as with the balance belt removed. I know there are some things that will need plugging, but not sure how it's done.

I know that Huntley Racing ( different story) would do that to their racing engines... they would balance the internals then go as such... so I know it's possible... I just don't know the procedure.

Search for a post by rage2, he posted some pics in a thread showing his. IIRC basically it was a CNC'ed aluminum "puck" that went in place of the front shaft, and a smaller one at the back.

I bought a S2 that had a broken belt and I didn't know it at the time. The car was in superb condition and the price was right so bingo, I bought it on the spot. I drove it home and noticed a slight harmonic, but that's all, nothing serious. After the belt was installed and everyting set properly, it was silky smooth. I really don't think the balance shafts are required, I think they're just desired, to keep the Porsche name up there where it belongs. Like the guy said, if you want to know what the car will run like without the balance shafts, just take the belt off and try it. I'm sure there are a few more horsepower to be gained by doing that, whether you'll notice it or not remains to be seen.

Finally, I might know something! Excellence issue #118 has an article on page 131 that mentions balance shaft deletion. They even say the car was seen here on Rennlist in April 2001. 600hp 951!!!

theedge- Right, they said "Custom plates were fabricated to go over their housings."

If you don't have the issue, I can PM you the name of the company the guy used.

That car wasn't even 600hp, and it only lasted 2 laps!!

Someone makes a kit for to delete the BS, and I will find the information for you later. Some people who run no BS have had issues with the oil pickup tube cracking, from the vibration I guess. Others I know have run without them with no issues.

They used plates, but ive seen some pics where aluminum pucks were used, with the stock cover. For the turbo, one was made with an oil passage through it, to the turbo oil feed line.
