Question Best replacement speakers and where to buy them

Ok, so now that I have my car all sorted out mechanically, and I should shoot the final coat of paint this weekend - I need some tunes. I bought a XM radio for it today and had it activated, works great except for all the buzzing and crackleing from the rotted-out speakers.

So here's my questions - what are the specifications for the front and rear speakers on a late 944? Where can I buy them? Which ones are guranteed to fit correctly?

If anyone has new ones lying around for sale - let me know!

IIRC they're 4x6's and the rears are a bitch to get at.

If you go to Crutchfield.com you can just tell them the car and they'll give you a list of what fits. Decent prices too from the time's I've dealt with them.

(Seems that we're both focusing on tunes right now.)

I just updated my speakers. not wanting to cut into the door panels and trying to keep them stock. I replaced the paper door speakers with Alpine SPS-460A 4*6's which cost about 70.00. The rears I went with Eclipse 6" speakers.

I have the JL evolution component sets, with the tweeters mounted on the dash in the front, and above the rear windows in the back. (crossovers and amp hidden) It looks OEM. This is the only pic I have where you can see the tweeter, but I thought it was pretty cool:

shadowknight, are you refering to the rear speakers directly under the quarter window? Or the rear speakers in the hatch area? I am interested in replacing these speakers and have read a few different times that on certain year cars a block off plate was used between the 4x6m and 6.5 inch speaker options. Did your '87 come with the blockoff plate already, or did you require cutting to make the larger 6 inch speaker to fit (do you mean 6.5 inch?)?

I am planning on changing these speakers sometime next week..just want to get an idea of what i should order before i start.

well, ive replaced them both ways, in the red car for some reason i cut the perforated speaker holes out in the rear, pulled the old one through the holes, then put clip nuts in the panel and mounted the speakers in the panel. Not the best way but turned out pretty good. Best way is to pull the rear windows-not hard-now i know- and pull the whole panel out. Rears and fronts are 4x6, i put in pioneer two way speakers, not the best in the world i know but they actually kick ***, alittle bit of bass to em and great sound. Im kinda partial to alpine as well. Erins car i put in some alpines-maybe blaupunkt cant remember- but they rock as well. I know the rock put in some speakers in his car from JBL i believer they are a 4x6 plate w/a small sub looking speaker and a tweeter, they work great too. Try crutchfield.com or something.

My set up (Early 944) is pretty good, I guess, for just replacing the stock speakers, not adding a sub or amp.

2 alpine 4x6 two ways in the front, and 2 clarion 4x6 plate speakers in the back... I figured the rear speakers are closer to my head, and the plate speakers are slightly clearer with less bass, so I put those there, and the alpines, with more bass, down in the door panels. Sounds pretty good...

Kind of want to add some additional 6x9's in the hatch area, but I don't feel like cutting anything up.

I just put a pair of the alpine sps 460 4x6's in the front doors. Fit perfectly with the stock grills.

I have some Eclipse 4x6" 2 way ovals and Infinity 4x6" plate speakers in my cabrio. IMO you are better off with ovals. The plate speakers do not have enough cone area, and you need all you can get if you do not have anything bigger than 4x6" in the car. The plate speakers would be good if they were supporting a couple 6.5" speakers in the wheel well area but for all around 4x6" get the best ovals you can. Eclipses are great.

xsboost, i was thinking of doing the same thing for the sake of avoiding removing the glass and the panel. Im curious though, is the 4x6 speaker mounted directly behind the perforated area on the panel, or is it offset at all? I am scared to cut the panel out to find i cut the wrong portion out...etc.

Any pictures of that setup completed? I am interested in seeing how you did it.
