2.5-3 inches should be long enough. I just bought the bolts but I can't remember which sized they were. Bring in one of your bellhousing bolts and have them match it up. It's metric. Grade 5 or better should be ok.

Yep, 2 of the bellhousing bolts are long enough for most engine stands, and take the others from the crossmember, since it always comes out when the engine is out (or it should). That or use all 4 from the crossmember.

I have to get some bolts for a used engine I will start rebuilding this winter (bought the engine but it did not come with bell housing or cross member bolts) so I need to get them from hardware or auto store but not sure what thread the engine takes
what i'm figuring is metric > 3.5" but coarse style (not thin)...what sized bolt...m6, m4?

no they are huge, more like M12 IIRC. the length depends on your engine stand bracket....mine had to be about 4" long. thread pitch is somewhat unique. i'll have to check the workshop manual when i get home.

well the porsche dealer has them of course...$8 for a bell housing bolt (~90mm), $6 for subframe bolt (~70mm), and $10 for a control arm bolt (~100mm)
found a bolt shop but they are of course closed on weekends - will get some next week.
thanks everyone
