Default effin clutch job!! GRR

Gah.. now i realize why they say it takes 22hrs for a 1pecie x-over. The bolts on the exhaust flanges are a bitch to get to. We (3 of us) worked on the car from ~10pm - 4:30am and got 4 bolts out, wastegate vacumm hose d/c and shifter linkage disconnected. A lot of time was spent trying to find things and decide what all really needs to come off. So couple of questions.

Tranny, i'm sure we have to remove it b/c of the tourqe tube?
Intake manifold? Can we get the exhaut off with out removing the intake manifold. (i'm sure i have a 1 peice x-over. Does anyone have a good pic? The LR 2peice pictured is actually 3peice.)

Gah.. any help would be great. I'm going to go attempt to get some more done on it today.

I don't see why you'd have to remove the intake. I assume you're not taking the engine out, but coming through the tranny? If so, the tranny definitely needs to come out.

I'm not sure if it's true but in the manual it says the enigne mounts need to be disconnected and the engine moved to the left(?) a few inches, even with disconnecting the tranny, maybe thats why the intake would need to be taken off? Just an idea.

I don't know how to drop the turbo exhaust, but I'm sure you'll need to remove the transmission to make room for the torque tube to slide back enough that the bellhousing can clear the pressure plate.

To get at the bolts/nuts that attach the crossover pipe to the turbo you need the intake manifold out.

Wes here's a two piece crossover. The little pipe leading into the wastegate is the second piece.

Yea, if you have a wastegate that looks like tom, you do not need to remove the intake or the crossover pipe, you can just disconnect and remove the wastegate out of the way by disconnecting at the triangle flange. It will leave you enough room to get the bellhousing out. If you have one with a solid one piece deal going to the wastegate (IE no triangle flange as you can see in this pic, instead just one long pipe to the wastegate), then you have 2 options: 1 spend the 15 minutes and remove the manifld so you can remove the crossover pipe or 2, try to get to the crossover bolts from underneath which is a royal PITA. Here is the tip for the bottom crossover pipe bolt that is in backwards (when compared to the other 3), bend a 15mm wrench into somewhat of a C shape. It will give you a lot more room to turn. Yes the tranny has to come out and the torque tube must be rotated 180 degrees and shoved backwards (The shifter handle if it were still attached would point down at the ground). For the bellhousing, long extensions and a universal joint. If the intake is off, you can get at the upper bolts with a wrench.

Also, remove the heat shield from around the brake booster, it makes getting the crossover pipe bolts out much easier. It is 3 nuts and 1 bolt, and can be a little stubborn to come out.

And follow clarks-garage's instructions, they are ALMOST word for word of what needs to be done.

To clear it up for the non turbo piece. The one piece crossover pipe for the exhaust inhibits you from removing the bellhousing off the engine (there isn't enough room). With the 2 piece crossover, enough of the pipe going to the wastegate disconnects, and allows the bellhousing to come off the engine.

To remove the crossover pipe from the turbo side, you pretty much have to remove the intake manifold and work from the top for 3 bolts, and from the bottom for 1 bolt. Some have removed the crossover pipe all from underneath the car, but i think you can remove the intake manifold much faster.

Thanks guys. I got more stuff done today but was just pondering that it would be easier to take the manny off to get to the turbo bolts.

Another question.. On the slave cylinder, just take the line off, then the cylinder its self? I've been following the write-up on tech-session.com. Not very detailed, but close. The 1peice x-over is a bitch! If i had the time and money, i'd get the 2 peice, but don't have either at the moment. I'm aiming to get this done for the fest. Hopefully i can get it done.
