Serge told me something good the other day and I think it fits here.. this quote may be a few words off but it was something like,

But wait till you hit 3k in 3rd! WWWWHHHHHOOOOOOSSSSHHHHHH! Goodbye all the V8 crap! and the mazdas, toyotas, nissans and other imitators.
My 83 NA did felt surprisingly fast when i first drove it. I kinda expected it to be a lot less responsive on the highway speeds. The S2 is another world and def. feels like a strong german 6 from mid 90's. Still my friends 1.6l Miata with 170K tired motor and extra 12psi makes me wish i had a 951 to keep up with the bugger. Otherwise NA 944s are plenty for the street if driven at sane 10/10th.
