Default Polished manifold - how to keep it from oxidizing?

Hey guys....

I just finished polishing my intake manifold. Is there any type of coating I can put on it to keep it from oxidizing? I was thinking a high temp clear coat, however clear coat is ment to go on a rough/painted surface. Any ideas?

Thanks

i dont see why you couldnt use high temp clear coat. is it THAT particular clear coat that is meant for a rough painted surface? i used a clear coat on my center caps after painting (didnt paint the silver part, and still cleared over that) and that was fine. would of been better had i waited for it to cure before popping them back in....now you know i did it because i left finger prints in them

i was gonna mention jet hot coat, or powder coating, but that might make all the work you put into polishing it seem... wasted. although if you smoothed it all out, that helps make the powder coat/ jet hot coat look nicer too.

You could anodize it.

That is false....polished wheels usually recieve 2-3 coats to retain the finish otherwise it will always tarnish. Clear coat has always worked well on smooth, clean surfaces in my experience.

Even a shaker can clear coat will yellow at engine temps. The only thing that won't get cloudy at high-temp is a clear powder coat. I've found that using Happich Semi-Chrome Aluminum Polish is the best by far if you don't end up putting a final fiinish over it.

That's the problem with polishing.

Yep, Semi-Chrome is great, as is Nevr-dull. Since you have reduced the pits and asperities by a significant amount it is a lot easier to wipe off any oxidation. Even a wipedown with something like WD-40 or BoeShield T-9 should work pretty well for you, though the Boeshield is a bit waxy for this maybe.

There are several guys here that have the polished looked. Be patient and I'm sure they will chime in sooner or later. They definately look nice, that's for sure.

I got tired of the upkeep on my polished intake, so I had it Jet-Hot coated and have been happy ever since.

Semi-Chrome is my fave 2 . Heck I don't think polished aluminum oxidizes all that quickly.

I would love to get it jet-hot coated, however, isnt that fairly expensive? I remeber it would cost like 150 bucks for my headers to be coated. A 968 manifold isnt small, it would probably be twice that.
I have some 1200 degree clear coat in the garage, Im thinking about just using that. The problem is that its the rattle-can style. I dont know if it will come out all that great. Should I clear coat it, or leave it just polished?

Thanks!

Leave it polished. A once over with a little polish when you wax the car will keep it looking sharp. Clear can always chip, flake, yellow...

Eastwood sells a product called Nylac, comes in a spray can. It is a clear coat that is supposed to not yellow over time. I used it on a set of Jeep Al. rims once. It lasted for 2 years w/o problems. Then sold Jeep...

I have a few sets of polished intakes, and just leave them bare. An occassional hit with meguires or simichrome does the trick.

Try powdercoat for a set-it-and-forget-it feel.

Scott
