Default Rattle that goes away when clutch is depressed, what could it be?

I've got a rattle coming from under the rear of the car, that goes away when the clutch is depressed. It sounds like its coming from the tranny area. The car runs and shifts great. What could it be?

thanks in advance.

Jon

Jon, I have the same noise on my car. It is also an '89 S2 with a few more miles than yours. My problem is that the main shaft bearings on the tranny are worn. I have play in the shaft. I'm planning on a rebuild so I'm not too worried about the noise. My car, like yours, still shifts fine.

Torque tube bearings.

Z could posibily be right on the TOB since those noises can be hard to track with the torque tube transfering the sound unless you use a mechanic's stethoscope.

However, our transmissions do make some noise if you leave them spinning in neutral. Even good ones. Sort of like marbles rolling around. If it isn't too loud I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys, I was thinking it was the throw out bearing, but the area the sound was coming from confused me. I'll check it with a mechanics stethoscope.

Albert: Nice car, where did you buy those replica turbo wheels?

Does it make the rattle at idle and out of gear or only moving with clutch engaged? Noises travel all over that torque tube and it's nearly impossible to find them from inside the car.

Exactly. I have the same problem in my car, but it's not worth fixing for me.

The parts that stop spinning when you depress is everything behind the flywheel. I had a worn out pilot bearing (seized) and wore out the tip of the torque tube shaft so it rattled like crazy. It could also be the throw out bearing, torque tube bearings, or input shaft bearings in your transmission.

What would cause a clank everytime when you let up on the clutch?

A failing rubber center clutch does exactly this. A really really worn ring and pinion can clank but I bet it's the clutch.

I bet the rubber center causes heavy vibration in the shifter in 5th too.

I've had the same problem on my car since I purchased it almost 4 years ago. My mechanic told me it's the main shaft bearings and there's no harm being done. The sound should go away when the clutch is replaced and all else is rebuilt.
