It's a sad day, but I have to make room for a 4-door type car. So, My 1983 944 is up for sale. What really sucks is all the work and money I put into this car. So, here are the details, as well as a picture. If you want more pictures, please let me know.

1983 Porsche 944, 151,000 Miles. Maint records date back over 10 years. Was well maintained by PO. The car drives very well, and there is nothing that has to be fixed right now.

So, the total on all that stuff - About $3680

Dear God, shouldn't have added that all up. But - You will be getting one extremely well sorted 83 944. It has manual steering.

The interior is good. The dash has the coverlay cover, along with the Carbon Fiber Trim. The steering wheel and seats are recovered. The shifter also has a nice new boot. The back seat is crappy, but it's there. The carpet is good, and it has nice embroidered Lloyd's mats.

The paint is the only thing that is not in great shape. I would give it a 6/10. It looks good from 50 ft, but close up there is some peeling and some scratches and such. There are a few small dents. Nothing major. The hood has a couple of rough spots in it, and the nose panel has a couple of depressions in it. I was going to repaint in the late summer.

Mechanically the car is absolutely sound. Nothing rough about the idle or running. The clutch is tight, and it shifts perfectly. The A/C blows ice cold. The radio is a Sony X-Plode with AM/FM/CD and has a remote control.

I really, really, really, really hate to see the car go, but it has to. I will be offering it to you guys first, then on Craigslist. If no bites I may try evilBay, but don't wanna.

So, here is a pic of her... and the price. I am asking $4900. Is that out of line?

Sorry to say it, but I think you will have a tough time getting that asking price. Throwing money into a car is always a bad investment, especially with an early 944. That's why I'm not even gonna try to fix up my '84 NA before selling it. I'd never be able get back even remotely close to what I put into it.

That depends on how long you want to wait for the sale. Wait long enough, and someone will probably pay it, or close to it (applies to anything, really). Faster sell? Just go a shave below average. I would cruise through cctol.com, auto trader, and others just to get a feel for market value. Absolute best of luck to you!!

$4900 for a well-sorted 944 as you've described is a bargain. Much, much better value than the ill-maintained heaps that go for half that price. Wait for an intelligent buyer. You only need one.

Why so soon Jonathan after all the work you put into it so far? Hold out for the right buyer, you might not get your full price but if you are patient Summer is coming and prices will rise. I hate to see you go. Use craigslist.com as well as autotrader.

I agree with that. The people that tell you that you can get a well-sorted early 944 for $2K are not taking the expenses neccessary to bring it up to snuff (well, at least my opinion of "up to snuff", others may be happy driving jalopies that are held to gether with duct tape and bubble gum, but not me).

I hope you can wait for the right buyer to come along, that looks like a nice car. Sorry that you have to sell, it seems like you just got it...............

$4,900 is not unreasonable at all. With all the maintenance up to date, someone who knows these cars will buy it at or close to your asking price. I bought my 86 from its orginal owner for $2,500 three years ago. I imediately spent around $1,500 getting the maintenance up to date, plus replacing the oil cooler, and putting on two rebuilt control arms from Vertex because the right front ball joint had play in it. So $4,900 for a car that is ready for the road is reasonable, especially with the receipts showing all the work that's been done recently.

I think that the price is reasonable as well as long as it is well sorted out. Yes the price is comparable with some later 944's but none the less yours seems to be taken care of.

Just last month I watched an '83 NA go on ebay for over $7500 it did have 1/3 of your milage but it to looked like a nice example of an early. Remember, your car will be exempt in a lot of states in just 2 years, and already is in some, from emissions and such.

The manual steering on your car will be an added plus to many people seeking the natural feel of a well balanced car. You might consider a price option with or without the MM 993' Cup's. Driving the car with your new Koni's and cookie cutters would put a smile on any prospective buyers face and come very close to what Porsche designers had in mind when the 944 debuted. Good luck on your sale Jonathan, I hope you return the the fold sometime, you will miss the car.

I also think the price is reasonable.....especially with all the maintenance just done....my 84 has the same mileage and recent maintenance plus new paint and new (rennbay) black sport seats (early style)....brand new 17' cup 2's and khumos.....right now getting new headgasket and seals.....I am not selling but if I was, I would be asking about the same price.....not saying I would get it or sell it for less, though........

I would not balk at that price either. Plus, it is a good season for selling these sorts of cars, so I think you are being very reasonable.

It's tough when you need to sell since you never make back near to what you put in. I hope it works out well and you return to the Porsche fold soon!

I plan on returning... However, next time it will be with a great example of a 951 or 968. The more I think about selling her, the more I get sick about it. Thanks for all the support so far!

I also agree with the aformentioned comments - $4900 for well-maintained early 944 will catch the eye of someone who knows these cars.....just remind those thinking the value should be far less of the wise adage - there is nothing more expensive then a cheap Porsche - hurry back -
