Default Which is better-89NA or an S

So I know the 89 has less horsepower and more low end torque, along with standard ABS and an alarm. But the S has about 20 more ponies with stronger brakes. Whats the consensuses on which one is better? Has anyone on here driven both long enough to have a fair opinion?

i have driven both. the S has more power obviously, but as far as the engine goes, i like the design of the 2.7 better. it has the 3.0 block and a head with BIGA$$ intake valves. perfect for my upcoming 3.1 L turbo project. personally i think the internal cam chain tensioner is just too finnicky on the S, the S2, and the 968 with the variocam. but oh well, to each his own.

S has 188 hp, 2.7L has 165 hp. marginally better torque for the 2.7L. brakes are the same. suspension is the same.

yes i forgot to mention the brakes are the same. the only difference in brakes comes with the s2 and the turbo when compared to other 944's

From what I have seen there are more 'S' cars with sports seats, LSD, forged wheels, and such.
I suppose it was the enthusiast's NA until the S2 came out and often optioned accordingly.

If it were me I'd prefer the 'S'

I have an 87 S and after taking one drive in it (not even tuned up mind you) I was impressed.

I have never driven an 'S' . I have read about some finickyness with the cam tension as mentioned above.. The 2.7L like the 3.0L S2 I have read, are renouned for their constant power curve through mid-range rpm.

Which is one of the pros for the S2 vs. 951 match-up.. but that's another topic.

There is nothing like hearind the 16 Valve motor in full song. I've owned a 951 and an S2, and while the 951 has A LOT of power above 3k, and the boost is very addictive, the S2 is more practical and refined. It depends on the person's prefrences.

In the 89 n/a vs. 87-88 S comparison, I would take the S just because of the 16V motor's sound and slight additional power. Since both are about the same price, and everything else is identical, the S seems like a better buy.

The S2 does seem a bit watered down and less lively compared to the 87-88 S.
