Default Swapped trannys, now no speedo!

I did a quick search, but didn't find anything on this. I thought for sure this had happened a few times!

Just recently I (finally!) swapped trannys out of my '86 NA - last fall had lost a couple gears, and bought a 924S tranny from NC. Finally installed it a couple weeks ago, wasn't as bad as I thought.

In any case, the speedometer now doesn't work - I'm assuming it has to do with the little bolt-in gear unit I moved from the old transaxle to the new one. Seemed to go in fine, but I guess not.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and what is my old tranny now worth?

TIA

Goody

On a 924S, the speedo runs off the front left wheel. The transmission does not have a speed sensor in it.

Ouch dude. So is there a way he can remedy this without having to get another tranny? Take the wheel sensor from a 924S and put it on his 944???

There is no wheel sensor on the 924S. Or on the early 944's. The cable for the speedo goes through the center of the spindle and sockets into the grease cap on the wheel hub. Yes the speedo on the 924S and the early 944's are cable driven. Someone with transmission experiance can answer if you can pull the side covers and swap out any parts.

I am the one wth the experence that wll tell you what to do.

You need the driver sde transmission oil seal and the white nylon DRIVE gear from Paragon. Pull the stub axle out and the old seal and place the drive gear in there. (you can use the old drive gear from the other tranny - this will also show you how it goes). Replace the oil seal with new. This is a 5 minute operation, at most, and you DO NOT NEED TO RESET ANY IMPORTANT TORQUE VALUES. The 924S tranny came with a block-off bolt on top - I am sure you figured out to exchange the TOP portion, however, as it is obvious.
PM me if you need any more explaination.

I was under the impression the 87 924s had the speedo sensor?

Otherwise, I think you can swap the front spindle from an early car to get a readout from there? or does the early car go by a mechanical cable and not electrical signal.

Yieldsign - you are under the wrong impression.

Anyone who second guesses me, will be wrong. I speak from much experience.

Thanks Jim,

One would think any trans with the fitting for the sender would also be fitted with the proper drive take off. Opens up the 924S transmissions for swapping.

There is an after market setable pulse generator that can be fitted to the early speedo cables. This will send the required pulses to the later speedos. Now all one needs is an electrical to mechanical interface for the later AC fresh air control panel.

Guess it'll be this weekend before I can get under the car to check it out.

What's the old tranny worth?

Oh, and sadly enough, after I get the speedo working, the car will be for sale. Waaaaay too stinking busy with projects and ventures that I've relegated to my '99 Maxima SE for the time being. Gonna sell the 944.
