Default my 968 vs a Firebird Fire hawk

A co worker of mine has a Firbird firewhawk ws6. I think its around 315 hp and raves about how awsome of a sports car it is, how it handles and brakes.......so the other day he gave me a ride home. I said "show me what this thing has" so he guns it on the freeway. It had decent accelaration to 100MPH, as we approached traffic he got on the brakes hard and the whole car started to shake. I'm thinking " a sports car? the car almost fell apart under hard braking, what would happen to the piece of crap if we were on the track"

So today we both left work toghther, as we approched the on ramp to the freeway, we made the eye contact. I was in second gear at about 4000 RPM, right where i wanted to be. I'm thinking i have 236 Hp he has 315. @ 80 Hp more, i was expecting to get my as beat, especally after 70.

So we both hit it, top of second i'm a half car ahead of him......top of third still i'm ahead, he couldn't pass, I held on to the lead, 4th gear still holding the margin.......as we got up well into tripple digits, i let off as he did too. He has twice the motor and my little 4 banger held its own, I was proud!

I aint gonna be a ***** and be like OH NO STREET RACING is horrible because im sure plenty other people will do that.

All i wanna say is NICE JOB! Youd be surprised how our little 4 bangers (even the N/a) hold up to some other cars that have higher horsepower and are "faster". Clearly the other guy was overconfident and he got showed up by Stuttgarts finest.

Wow, I thought WS6's were faster than that. My respect for 968's just went up, and my respect for WS6's went down.

an LS1 in stock trim is fairly tame (especially an auto), but they are VERY mod friendly, and can be made to over 500hp without going the forced induction route.

Tell him I'll pay for his entry fees the next time I'm out at Willow Springs with one of the open-track groups. We'll show that WS6 piece of cr*p what real sports cars can do. Maybe the Streets of Willow Springs with SpeedVentures or TCRA, which will show him some REAL handling... he'll fry his brakes within 5 laps!!! heh, heh...

Besides... it's impossible to cleanly drift an automatic...

Check out the 928 forum - the "Kill Stories" thread has been topped for a few months now.

Anyway - 0-60 on these (with a 6-speed) is just under 6 seconds. I've seen quite a few variations of F-Body cars run at Road America. They handle and break better than you might think - I wouldn't doubt there's something wrong with your friends car. How many miles are on it? With any GM car, much over 75k and the whole car is very tired.

I know two people who have late (2000 and 2002) Z-28s as track cars, and they have both spent thousands of dollars on brake upgrades and are still not happy. They both have frame ties, and one put a roll cage in the car this year because the roof of the car was developing stress tears/cracks. These guys run at tracks like Gingerman, Mid-Ohio, Putnam, BeaveRun.

Once upon a time, i was considering selling the 951 for something newer (read:warranty) and drove a variety of cars I thought would be a decent replacement. I drove a 2000 Z28. Good power and pulled like a train. However, the brakes were mushy and I felt very uncomfortable with the gross understeer. Two halves ofthe car felt loosly connected. Almost as though the front of the car would rotate seperately from the rear. I'm not sure I'm describing it accurately but it was strange.

Needless to say, I still have the 951....

A WS6 is a huge heavy car. Forget HP its all about power to weight. A Lotus Elise with a meager 170hp Toyota engine would have humbled the both of you (and the rest of us) had he pulled alongside.

A WS6 will get you more muff than a 968 though. I had the 930 parked next to a bone stock 2001 Camaro Convertible at a car show last year and the young ladies would walk right past mine and gawk at the Mullet.

But are they kind of girls you would want? Maybe it was their brother's car?

Ok, I'll say it. Please don't street race. And please don't post your crap about street racing here.

Thanks,
-Z-man.

Until Rennlist makes a rule forbidding it - you might want to realize your views on this topic are not shared by the masses:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/192993-928-road-stories.html

This has been topped since March. So if anyone wants to share these kinds of stories and your sick of being bitch slapped for doing so. The 928 forum is a bit friendlier. I’m sure they won’t mind a few 944 stories.

Sorry Z - I share your views on street racing 110%, but this is a public forum, and the constant finger pointing "You shouldn't do that, don't post it anymore" is getting old.
