Default Buying an '88 Silver Rose

Hey all. I'm a newly minted Rennlist member, and soon I'll be a new Porsche owner. I'm looking at an '88 Turbo S Silver Rose and wanted to get some reactions. Somehow I doubt I'll hear anything bad, but please give me advice that may be usefull. Also, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a company that will finance older Porsches. Thanks.

Congrats and Welcome to Rennlist!

Make sure to spend the cash on a full PPI. (Pre-Purchase Inspection) It will tell you the whole story.

Financing can be had, it can be tricky and you may have to insure it to full limits if financing is arranged.

HTH- Best of luck!

Like those purple plaid seats do you?? Cool car... you can also buy an '89 turbo - no "s", but the same car as the 88 (in case you didn't know that).

If you're set on the rose silver...good luck finding one!

I actually found a perfect one, that's why I'm looking at it. I know the '89 turbo is the same car, but this one's in perfect shape and the price is right.

Funky plaid rules!!!

Here's what I've noticed with Silberossa prices (relative to regular 951TS) -- it usually commands a slight premium over other 951TS because of the "special" interior and color, but it can sometimes be had for cheap because the owner is sick and tired of the plaid and is about to puke. The interior -- because its cloth -- is prone to wear, which will also make it cheaper.

There are a couple of Silberossa's for sale in Rennlist classified for $15k -- which a typical asking price for an excellent example. Other places I'd look are - craigslist, autotrader, and PCA websites. A couple more recently sold on eBay -- you may want to see how much they went for. They have also sold for less than $10k, if you shop smart and shop lucky.

I've had good luck with Autotrader, both buying, and selling.

I know of a nice one that has ~ 80k on it for sale now. Here in the bay area. Price was right around $15k, and it had perfect paint, interior, and maintenance. It was a very nice car. The owner also owns an '89 S, and a Rothman's cup car. I went over to his house to check out the Rothman's car. If you are interested, PM me and I'll give you his phone #.

I'm on the east coast and found one in perfect condition that's been babied in New Jersey. It spent most of it's life in Georgia. The interior looks great and there are a few mods already, inlcuding a weltmeister chip, drilled rotors, lindsey boost enhancer and alpine stereo with Boston Accoustics speakers. i drove it the other day and it was perfect. I just need to sell my 2004.5 VW Jetta GLI 1.8t now.

My dad just bought one, with the Autothority chip for $15K... Also, it has 50k miles... poor repaint on the nose from stone dings, (I love Colorado) but other than that, it's great.

they're awesome cars. Good luck!

I would not finance a 17yr old Porsche, or any other 17yr old car for that matter. Why go into debt on a purely luxury item thats 17yrs old. 944 Turbo Ss would definitely in the classification of "non-necessity". Why hold yourself hostage to a bank on a dinosaur. These cars are dinosaurs compared to the new stuff. Great cars, but my opinion usually is if a bank is needed to get you into the drivers seat of an old Porsche to begin with, youll probably need a bank to get you out of one too.

I liken it to walking into a Rolls Royce dealership and asking how much extra the convertible is compared to the coupe. If you have to ask, you cant afford it.

I basically agree, although if you have cash flow debt isn't the worst thing in the world. I could buy the car with cash (assuming I sell my VW) but it would eat all my savings. Not a smart move. Thanks for the reality check.
