SCCA spec 944
I know you were all looking for a race spec 944 but I am actually
asking for advice.
I have a 83 944 which I have decided to prepare for SCCA Solo
racing. My question is..
What class should I shoot for?
I have been reading the rulebook for 2005 and have decided
not to go stock class but rather street prepared. Anyone else
done this? wise or unwise?
Suggestions are very welcome.
btw.. I have to replace the engine.. elusive oil pressure issue
is forcing me to.

I believe you will get creamed in whatever class you choose, but anyway I would suggest that you try stock first, see how you like it for a year. Talk to fellow competitors about SP and see wha's involved. There is a lot you can do, but the miatas can do it better!

I agree with timo. EVERY class in SCCA is competitive and only gets more competitive the further up you go. The one thing that will lower your times more than anything is driver skill.

Why bash the guy? Sheesh, give him some credit. If you don't have anything CONSTRUCTIVE to offer then STFU.

CO944 I laud you for your efforts; don't let these turkeys deter you from your dreams. Study the rule book and go for it. A lot of it depends on what your ability level is and where you think you're going to be a year or two from now. Do you think you'll be able to race enough to be appreciably better by then? Will you have the money to adjust / tune / modify your car to the rules of a more advanced class or not? There are a lot of variables about which rulebook you should build your car around. There's a reason why race guys are always ripping their cars apart and (re)tuning them and reworking them. Some of it has to do with reacting to rule changes, to race results, to driver habits and abilities, etc. Lots of variables. The sky (and your wallet) is the limit. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Brad, isn't 944spec a NASA thing, and not yet in Colorado? I'm confused, as I thought the 944spec the only things allowed to change were shocks, roll cage, restraints, and brake rotors/pads only...other than that, it MUST be a 944 NA 2.5L 4 cylinder, SOHC....
Or is that another thing that I'm thinking of?
Anyway, I'm interested in this too, so if you'd like some help, give me a call. I'd be interested in helping/ competing against you...

Thanks Jeff and Geoff.
Well I am a VW Technician so working on the car is obviously not a problem.
Money invested in my habit (by the way the only habit I have is cars) is always
well placed. I have fun just going to Second Creek and doing laps. Granted it
has been in volkswagens but I feel I am ready for a full season of racing.
I just dont want to take on miatas or anything else in a volkswagen because being
realistic, they have way more hurdles to jump over than Porsche. the Porsche
comes with the 2.5 litre vs. a MK2 VW best I can do is a 2.0 16v. The plan is to eventually
upgrade to a newer 944 after racing a couple of seasons with the 83.
I feel I have alot of potential as a driver.. had alot of experience at the track and working
on laptimes and improving apexing and handling braking. I am not professional but I am
no rookie either.
Geoff.. lets get together sometime and work out some ideas. Maybe at your May gtg?

944-spec is a NASA thing, but Arzona Region SCCA recognizes a very similar class as spec 944. I believe Southern California SCCA does as well.
I don't think SCCA in dever recognizes 944-spec. However you can build the car to rules and race in RS or some other regional catch all class. Talk it up and maybe builld the class there.
Also
SCCA Solo II - Autocross is not what 944-spec cars are built for. They are built for proper road racing. The do fit in SCCA autocross class, but will not be competive in that class. For the most part the 944 NA is not competive in any SCCA autocross class.
Now if you are talking about SOLO I (Time trial) then I don't know whatrules they use. Club Racing or Solo II.
Even so a 944 prepared to 944-spec or spec 944 trim is nice track day car and is fun autocross car.

C Street Prepared (CSP) is the class that the 944 would be in in the prepared classes in SCCA. Prepared miatas and MR2's are in that same class. The 944 gets crushed in that class. I consider myself to be a decent driver, and I have no hope against an equally matched driver in one of those cars.
If you are going into it for fun and improve your driving, then by all means go for it! That's really what it is all about anyway.
If you can leave the car stock, you do stand a better chance in ES.

that is the exact information I was looking for tifo and Joe. thanks!
Maybe stock would be better just to get my feet wet then work towards
a spec car.
What classes does Porsche have a chance in? Models?

In SCCA autocross the one that comes to mind is a 968 in B-Stock.
Pedalfaster is trying his hand at this year in a M030 car and so far doing quite well.
Since they moved the S2000 into A-stock the 968 is the car to have for B-stock.

You might end up having to race against OUR car though - I believe the 944 can enter SCCA under the GT / GT-2 category or the Production / EP category. There might be another one also, but I'd have to look again. Anyway, there's a new force rising in the west. . . Bwahahahaha!!!

I am not interested in winning as much as I am interested in gaining cone experience.
Thus far my track experience has entailed a actual raceway. Second creek raceway to
be specific.

Cones are foreign to me.

But it sucks, because this is the LAST year for 2nd Creek...no matter what. Commerce City already said that they will NOT renew the lease next year, so the racers shouldn't even ask.
