Default 944 n/a vs corrado g60

I am wondering what people think of these two cars in comparison to one another...I have heard from multiple people that the g60 outperforms and handles better than the 944....I find this hard to believe, but would love some input from people more educated on this subject

It may have better straight-line performance than the 944, but it won't out-corner it. So "out performing" is relative.

Though honestly, I think the Corrado would be a better "only car" kind of car, simply from a cost standpoint. Just make sure you do your research on the reliability of the supercharger. I'd expect build quality to not be as good, and electrical gremlins. But still, it's probably cheaper...

Back when I was heavily into VWs, the G60 wasn't the most realiable blower. It had very tight tolorances (which made it very efficient but also meant it wore out faster) and I've heard that the belts like to go (causing the G-lader to grind itself down and send the metal into the engine). There were, at one time, mods you can do (such as a twin-belt pully to help with the broken belt issues), which may help. I know that www.newdimensions.com was a good supplier of these parts, but I don't know if they still do, nor do I know if anyone else does now.

Personally, if I were to choose between a Corrado or a 944 as my only car on a limited budget, I'd probably go with the Corrado.

BB.

The suspension definately isn't as tight as the 944. I've driven my friend dan's Corrado. The VR6 was also faster than the G60 Supercharged. It wasn't that fast of a car really. My 944 was just a little slower than the Corrado.

It wouldnt be a better only care either.

Corrado's are hella fun and stock to stock I would say they are about even.

However, if you think you have seen some run down 944s you aint seen nothing until you start looking at Corrados. BTW, the SC on those is a very common failure point.

I was looking for a Corrado when I accidentally found my 951. Conventional wisdom with a G60 says unless you have receipts for a recent SC rebuild, factor the cost of that into purchase.

My advice: Sell a kidney and buy both. You really NEED both a FWD and RWD car for the full driving experience

Isn't the Corrado Front wheel drive though? That virtually takes the fun out of the car for me. I really enjoy RWD a lot more.

I have a lot of experience here.

I ran a VW club for 5 years, and among all my VW's, I had 3 Corrado G60's. My last one made 257hp/266tq to the wheels, still a 1.8L 8V.

One of my best friends just bought a G60 last weekend that had some minor issues for $1800. The supercharger had been rebuilt within the last 15k miles, and it ran well enough to drive home (74 miles). Just today, we have it a tune up and replaced the broken IC pipes. It runs pretty solid now.

It is without a doubt faster than my '88 944, and the G60 is completely stock. VW's point with the Corrado was to make it faster than the 944, and it is. As long as it's still making boost and not ragged like so many G60's are now. Most healthy G60's are only found in the hands of enthusiasts now.

They do handle exceptionally well for a FWD car. I was able to run down Boxster S's and S4's and many others on road courses. Not just in the straights, but in the corners.

This G60 my buddy just bought has 16" Borbet C's with 215/40 mis-matched rubber in poor shape (worn, cracking, etc). Other than that, the suspension is stock/original (140k miles). My 944 has stock 15" PD's and 215/60 rubber in good shape (Potenza G009). And after driving his car around today, I would actually think that it would at LEAST keep up with my 944 on a road course given equal drivers. I would actually put my money on the G60, when compared to my 944. It is more nimble than a 944 and weighs less.

Once the suspension is tuned, the corners would favor the 944 I would imagine. But once the G60 is modded, it would still win, dollar for dollar, around a road course. The 944 wouldn't have a hope of catching a mildly tuned G60 in the straights.

A common mod is a "Stage 4" kit. This consists of a chip/pulley/FPR/cam/ISV re-route, and costs about $495. With this kit, which takes about 90 minutes to install, my old G60 made 172.1hp/176.2tq to the wheels. I obviously went a little further than that eventually. But that will get the car to run a high 14 with a good driver and good traction. Trap speed should be 90-92mph.

If the G60 was RWD...I wouldn't be in a 944 right now. They really are that fun to drive. You should go test drive one just for fun.

I agree that the VR6 is a better VW. I have a friend that has one and I love the torque it has. It pulls pretty hard and after full suspension, it can handle very well. I don't know much about he G60 though. Not a SC fan, lol.
