Temp guage fluctuation?
Well I have had my car now for 2 months and so far have put 200 miles on it. I noticed today that when I drive the car the temp gauge is just below or at the 1st mark. When I stop at a light and am at idle, gague moves to the 2nd mark or just past it almost to the red area. If I rev the gas or begin driving it will go back down to the 1st mark. Does this seem normal? Should there be noticable fluctuation? Thanks for comments.

Sounds like an air pocket to me. This is the 88 951, right. If so, the 1st line, above the bottom, represents 145F and the upper mark is 185F. The fact that the temp falls tells me that the air pocket is being moved and water is now circulating past the temp sender.

Bleed the cooling system, and you will find that this problem goes away. You may also want to find out why there is an air pocket. Have you done any work recently, hoses, flush, waterpump? If not, and you don't see a leak, I'd pressure test the system to try to find the leak.

Sounds normal for a car with a bad temp switch in the radiator like mine had. The fan switch in the radiator has two speeds and the lower also controls the after run. I'd bet you haven't noticed the fans running after you shut the car down while hot either. A week or so later and I haven't seen the second white line. It's the temp switch, just went through it a week or so ago. Good luck

Can you hear the fan turn on at all when you are at a stop? Your symptom sounds like the fan is not coming on. Once the car is moving cool air is flowing through the radiator which cools the coolant and lowers the temp. Revving the eng at a stop and islowering the temp is not making much sense to me. I'd check your fan switch at your radiator if it's not coming on. I'd also go ahead and bleed thes ystem to make sure there is no air pockets in the cooling system.

The late cars have 2 fan speeds. I'd almost guarantee that the low speed is not working and when it gets hot enough the high speed fan is kicking on and cooling it down. I just went through this a little over a week ago, I also posted about it. Good Luck

One more question. When you say that as you start to move away from the light/stop, does the temp gauge DROP, like as in instantly? Or does it just gradually start to go down a little?

Mine does the same thing. What's interesting though, is I used to be able to just blip the throttle while sitting at a stop light and have the temp fall back down to the first mark, but then all of a sudden blipping the throttle had no effect and I couldn't make the temp drop back down until I actually drove away. Oh well, i'm so used to it being around 2nd mark during warm idle it doesn't even bother me anymore.
