Default CV Grease!

I got a click that occured from the passenger side rear axle, looks like i may need to repack the CV with grease.

Question, what type of grease? this is the local grease i found:

-Lithium based grease

-Suitable for all bearings & wheel hubs of cars, vans, trucks and normally loaded earth moving equipment.

-Meets DIN 51825 K2K-20 ISO L-XBCDA 3 and ASTM D4950 (GA) classification, NLGI Grade 3

-Protects against wear, rust and corrosion, resists water and does not soften during working

Sorry for being so stupid, but i need to know if this grease is fine to use with the CV's, i don't want to spend $70 on each CV and another $30 for shipping (each one).

TIA !

It should be "moly-based" grease.

Yep, needs to be moly based. The most common is moly disulphide, which is black moly grease, should be available almost everywhere, I use Mobil 1 synthetic CV grease, which is red moly.

The most common moly based grease has a dark gray to black color. Stay away from the brownish stuff. In U.S. auto parts chain stores they sell "CV joint grease" in plastic tubes that is moly based.

I did this job like 3 times last year. It's not difficult. Just very messy. Here's a pic of everthing you need for the job, including a tube of that CV joint grease:

You're kidding, right? Um, yeah? Why, don't you have it? I guess I always take for granted that most folks do.

I've got it. It's written for the early cars, so some stuff is pretty useless to the late cars. I think I've used mine twice and both times were because my hands were dirty and I didn't want to get my laptop dirty.

Did your CV boot crack and spew the grease that was there? Just curious.

Scooting: I ddnt see anywhere the factory manuals mentioned the rear axles, CV joints?

buzzsaw: Well, all four boots look fine............it could be the brake pads clicking. I ONLY get a very faint click when decelerating on 1st gear (very low speeds, like 2-3mph or so). No clicking while turning, accelerating, or any other load-base rpm relations at all..........

Come to think of it, the "click" i hear started the same time the brakes started squeeling........could be related.............

Hussam, the sound of CV bearings binding from lack of grease is like a "pinging" noise. The noise generally occurs under initial load, like at startup or in reverse.

It's not a bad idea to regrease them anyway, since that will greatly extend their useful life.

As for the Haynes, people put it down a lot, but I've actually found it quite useful over the 12 years or so that I've had it. Keeps getting dirtier and dirtier, though!
