Default Auto to Manual Conversion 924S

How involved is it to convert an automatic 924S to manual? Might be able to get a manual parts donor real cheap.

Hi Mike, Search the archives- this has been discussed several times before- i'm sure there is enough info to help you decide if you would be willing to do it..

Todd assured me it was pretty straightforward if the donor and the recipient are next to each other, IIRC a weekend project if well choreographed and an experienced helper is present..

AFAIK, the only cutting necessary in the automatic shifter support on the tunnel near the shifter.
I have never heard about mods necessary to the firewall. I did look into this very seriously for about 6 months- the bellhousing, torque tube and everything else with the tranny including the CV's need to be swapped out.

HTH.

Hmmm. just pulled this out of an old thread...

Keith - replied to your PM - anyhow sounds like you've done most of the special steps in the conversion. The metal bar the automatic shifter mounts to is inside the shifter well, cuts out easy with a Dremel. The conversion is overall not much work more than a clutch job. Cutting out the bar and finding the clutch master cylinder hole on the firewall are almost the only "modifications" to the body you need to make; you will also need to come up with a way to make the shifter boot mount up, since the automatic cars don't have a flange around the shifter well. Component wise, as someone stated, you must replace everything from the flywheel back. Regards Al

Doesn't sound too bad, the deal is that my freinds brother wrecked his dads 944, so i may be able to just get teh whole car for real cheap, and swap it all out. Might be a fun summer project.

Can the gauge cluster and wiring harness in the car be left as is?

Thanks
Mike

if you need a floor clip, (probably not) I should have one when we cut Rock's car up. I can cut the area around the shifter and you can bolt it in with a little sealer and have the flange for the manual boost. Let me know.

the guages should be the same, you'll probably need to jump or isolate the neutral safety switch from the auto shift lever. I'm not sure if it is open to start or jump to start, probably jump if I had to guess tho. You'll need to run leads to the rear on the trans for the reverse lights unless you aren't worried about it. I've never looked, they could be there. may have to jump the ones in the console area tho. Good luck

Well I dunno if this project is going down yet, depends on what happens with this potential donor car and a bunch of other crap, mainly if I wanna do this lol...

Thanks for the info

The other sticky areas are the neutral safety switch (which will have to be wired closed) the backup switch wiring will have to be extended to the manual transmission and the CC will have to have a switch wired in for the new clutch pedal. You probably want to change the speedo out of the manual car to get rid of the gear selector on the auto tach. everything else is pretty straight forward. I did this on my son's 944 and it went pretty smooth. we did the whole conversion swap in 3 days. The question everyone asks is "would I do it again" ... survey says , yep! it is a bit of work but not too bad in the end. The results were worth the effort in our case. good luck if you decide to tackle it.

I believe the holes are precut from the factory and you have to punch through the tabs. Its been a while since I did that conversion and make sure you close the neutral safety switch or the car will not start. You will have to change the pedals also and install the hydraulic lines to the clutch. I would only do it if the auto trans is bad. Otherwise, I would be tempted to sell the auto and buy a stick to start with.
