Default What should I pay for this?

1984 944 with 166K miles

needs:
Timing belt changed
New master cylinder
New power steering hoses
New radiator hoses
A seal fixed in the differential

and it has this "ding" in it
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y85...r/my944009.jpg

Drives like a champ, I have so much fun driving this car, and I really had my heart set on it. The seller was asking $2000, but my dad thinks that unless we can get it for $1000 we should walk away

pic doesn't work, sounds like you should walk away, a seal in the differential doesn't sound good, and the "ding" doesn't sound good either, just be patient, good cars are out there...

the seal would be the easiest job out of the bunch lol, the mechanic said he could fix it up in half an hour for $15 in parts

The diff seal could just be minor, check it out, prolly a shop wanted to sell the job, could be nothing. The only other thing that isn't an average need for the 944 cars is the master cyl, it's a toss anyway and atleast you know it may need it up front. The fender is just a fender man. Prolly find one for 50-100 bucks, might look and find one the same color too? Dunno, I don't like to pay more for anything, 2K isn't bad IMO and anything less is better. Try 1200, I think 1000 from 2000 is kinda an insult to the owner unless he's desprate. Be sure to remind him parts and service are expensive, even tho we all know other ways, lol. I was trying to talk the guy down on Tammy's car due to some parts it needed, then she burns me by telling him, yeah, he probably has all the parts at home. DAMMIT! Yeah, that was a nice long talk about wheelin and dealin on the way home. Good luck man. Shoot low, you can always come up.

Umm, I wouldn't call that a ding. More like a bash.

I also think $2000 is too much for that car. If it needs all the stuff you listed (which will add up to something pretty substantial), who knows what else it's gonna need?

I agree with your dad, anything over 1000 isn't worth it. I see these kinds of cars for 500-800 around where I live all the time. Almost bought one for 300, but decided to get a weltmesiter sway bar instead. Haha...

Is the fender touching the headlight bucket?
Looks like it might just need a fender to straighten it out, doesn't look like there is any hidden damage.
I would offer in the low 1000's, maybe 1200-1250?
Up here, that car would probably sell for 2000-3000, but these cars are over-valued up here.

rule of thumb, if I didn't do the belts, they have not been done inmy book, never trust the PO on stuff like that. I always do belts ASAP when I get a car. that's a given, about all of the 944 cars are or will be leaking PS fluid, unless work has been done, in that case he would be asking like 2500-3000 tho. Think, I figure, here, in the hood, anything that runs is worth a grand, 1000 bucks is beater territory. I don't want to see anyone pay too much but it's still a pretty decent car and there's 2K worth of parts on it if it was to be parted. I don't know how much longer 944s will stay cheap either.

Oh, and BTW, I paid 1600 for the 86 NA with 298K on the clock with minor things needed. I guess I should have given 50 bucks for it, it did have a dent in the non removable rear fender. Hell a 944 with a popped motor and a clean title is worth 1000-1500. Dunno, I guess I pay too much?

I would say no more than $800, for $1200 you can find a later model in equal to better shape, but in the end its worth what you are willing to pay.
