OT:Wanted Incredibly Cheap Car for Incredibly Stupid Project
#16
Yeah, we're interested in it, email me at yoyoguy2@gmail.com to discuss outside the forum. We'd want to move sort of rapidly, as the filming date is next weekend (March 19-20), and we need to get plane tickets.

long trips with questionable vehicles always make for the best stories.
So here we were, going down vail pass with a trailer... engine vaporlocked all to hell... and the brakes dissapeer.... oh man.
yeah... all the lights except the headlights went out... we ran power to them through the cigar lighter and a homemade piggyback harness, and lit the gauges with a maglight taped to the steering column.
The throttle cable broke, so we tied a rope to the throttle linkage and out the back of the hood, in through the window. Getting the car going was a bet sketchy with synchronizing the clutch, but it was alot of fun.
The windshield wipers broke, so we had a guy hanging out the bus door with a really long squeegee
So guys.. two of our 4 vans broke down... and 1 of the 2 that runs is out of communication range. We all need to pack into the one van. Thats right... all 34 of us.
Nah man, I dont need a tent. I will just sleep in the hatch of my 944.
Ever done 100mph in a 90hp car at 8000ft with 2 bigass kayaks on the roof? its intense!
We didnt bother to reconnect the parking brake, its just for parking. And this is just a test run, we arent planning to park. And thats when we realized our brakes were pumping air.
No... none of the gauges work. I judge my speed off of what others are doing, and do a demographic comparison. If they are a grandma, i try to go a little faster. If they look like me, i try to stay about 20mph below them.
Good times, good times.

Don't you have to get teh car registered/inspected to do this?
Oh and I hope it doesn't go like Top Gear's old porsche road challenge... although the 924 was the one that made the trip without breaking down.

the top gear challenge was somewhat of an inspiration for this actually, but we were'nt really looking for porsches, just something old and quirky enough to be interesting. As far as being legal, after registration you have 2 weeks to inspect it (in vermont, where it'll be registered) and if you transfer plates from another car you can do it without the car there in person. i'll obviously add it to my insurance, but that can be done instantly over the phone, so no big deal. though a bad idea, it's really not hard or illegal to do this sort of thing.

Yea -- this would definitely something for Rennlist archives.
BTW, you'd better book your plane tickets fast -- tickets get pricey around spring break season....

Sounds like good times, I wish I could do the road trip with you guys!
Ditto on the video, you'll have to get it hosted and put it online for us!
PS...in my area, A2 VW GTi's/Jettas/Golfs for for around $750 in (mostly) running condition. Also easy to work on and cheap for parts if crap does hit the fan.

Here are the pics. My final disclaimer (since I don't want you guys to come all the way out here and then freak out on me and say I've misrepresented anything) is that it's clearly an "as is" kind of deal. I'll gladly answer any questions you have and I'll send you an e-mail like you requested, but PLEASE understand what you're getting into. This poor girl needs some serious love and I hope it makes it home for you and you can treat her right and rebuild her. I can't promise anything though. It might blow up three blocks from here, it might make the whole trip without a hiccup. Don't know. Anyway, the only wrinkle is I need to take the bill of sale I have from the P.O. down to the DMV to get it into my name so I can transfer it to you. I'll discuss further details via e-mail when you're ready to move on it.
