This from an Albertan? Too funny.

Everything is for sale, at the right price. Don't expect a deal if you go to him.

I do not agree that you won't get a deal if you go to him. It is all in how you approach the sale. Take it from a guy who has sold thousands of vehicles in the past 5 years. Go ask if it is for sale. Do not be weird, (a 70-ish old man will freak out on you if you seem weird )
Just ask him about the car and tell him you are an enthusiast and would like to know about it. If it is a car he owns you will find out. If it is a child's or grand child's car he will tell you that too. Just do not offer a dollar amount until you establish some kind of common ground with him. This should be easy if you live on the same street, neighborhood, etc.
When the time is right ask if he has EVER considered selling the 944. His answer will not only confirm the deal but also tell you how much to offer if it come to you making the offer. Most of the time he will make the offer to you.
Sorry for the blabber, I've just been selling cars for too long I guess, but hey at least I am not a lawyer. JK.

here is the compromise.

tell the guy you are interested in a 944 and saw his. what can he tell you about 944s? Listen, listen and listen. ask a few more questions, then ask him about his car, and ask if he knows of any people with a car like his for sale, or if he is interested in selling his car.

Oh, yeah....good idea NOT to throw dollar amounts out. Just ask if its something that would be considered. Price is negotiable later. And younever know, sometimes you make a friend and maybe down the road you will get a call about a certain car for sale cheap...

This how I got my 84 944 turned spec car.

My dad saw it drving around cave creek though it had a forsale sign. A few weeks we came around and it was still there no sign. So we went and knocked on the door and asked. We chatted 944 a little and he showed us his other cars. Then negociated price and were done.
