Default Strange starting problem

When I go to start my 951 when it's cold it will crank a couple of revolutions and sometimes it will all of a sudden act as if the timing is way advanced and is predetonating. This is before it actually starts. Then within a few more revolutions it will start right up and run with no problems. No sign of detonation when it is running. The injectors were recently rebuilt by a reputable firm so I don't think I have an injector squirting. Anyone encountered this or have any ideas? Thanks, TNT

Can you smell fuel in the oil after sitting a while?

Are you sure its not the starter kicking back? My starter did this a while ago, and finally went out.

No, I don't smell fuel after it has set a while. I hadn't thought about it being the starter.

Tom, were you the one in the E-Mail lists whose starter mysteriously drove his car into the garage wall overnight? That was a creepy story!

Yep, old time'r, that was me. Water ran down the cable and shorted the connectors (which had no barrier between them!) The replacement starter had a barrier between the connectors, but went badwithin a year. When it did, it caused the engine to kick back and feel maybe kind of like a chevy with a broken timing chain. I replaced it again and have not had problems since.

My 84 has done this for me for about 3 years now. It runs fine once it's running. There's no funny smells or anything when you're starting it, it just won't fire.
I'm starting to think it's the FPR or something... i know the AFM is going out too.
