I feel like it's just a few more bill's they are trying to get out of me. What's the service life of valve stems?

cheap insurance, those things get flung about at high speeds.

in all likeliness they are not neccessary but most of the places I goto they replace them for free so I don't really complain.

Depends on the wheel type. The screw in, metal stems need not be replaced. The rubber ones I'd replace. Cheap insurance.

If you have the rubber ones, get those stick-on braces that hold them against centrifugal force. I thought those were a joke until I had a valve stem partially tear out (and the tire consequently go flat) on the one wheel that didn't have one of those things...

Rubber valve stems harden and tear over time. How long? I dont know but I do know that most people will blame the tire store when their tire fails because they didnt want to change the valve stems. It wouldnt be the first time someone was sued because of it.

Metal screw in types MAY not need replacing but the seals do harden and leak. Metal stems probably leak more than any other that I have seen. They are almost never replaced and the seals dont fit every wheel the same.

There are about 400 kinds of valve stems and all have failed at some point, I am sure. What is 10 bucks in the grand scheme of life?

That being said, who buys the "insurance" with their tires?

I usually do. I have replaced a few S-02 and S-03 for almost nothing because of it.

I have had 2 very leaky rubber valve stems in a row on one of my wheels. It was absolutely rediculous. Shop finally gave me a metal valve stem for that wheel.

I recommend you do the same. Not only do they look better but they also dont flop around at high speeds and should NEVER leak.
