Whats the widest tire that can fit on a 15" phone dial on an 86 944 N/A?
235? 225? Thanks in advance

225 is a decent fit, I would not go wider.

Aside from the fact that wider isnt available (in a sidewall height we would want) the sidewall bows and flexes too much during cornering loads. In short, it would handle like sh*t.

In that case, what's the "best handling" width tire for a 15x7 wheel? (and for a 15x8 as well, I suppose)

"Best handling" would probably be a 205.

Best grip with a 225.

Wide wheel + relatively narrow tire = good.

If this is a daily driver, use 225 on 7" and for 8" - no wider. The reason? Rain performance. With a wider tire you will already be all over the road with those widths when it's monssoning.

If you're really interested, the manufacturers give guidance on what size rims to use for each type and size of their tires. www.tirerack.com has these available. I've found them elsewhere like on manufacturers sites as well. There's a lot of info in the tables like tread width and actual height.

FWIW I run 225/60/15 on all 4 corners, 1986na w/phone dials. A little tall, but I like the width.
