Default James Dean on . . .NASCAR?

This article is a nice explination of Dean and his legacy, but the part that made me say "HUH?" was this:
Warner Bros. plans to release ``Giant,'' ``Rebel'' and ``East of Eden'' on DVD this year. And Dean's image will adorn two NASCAR racing cars this summer.
OK DVDs are good, but, NASCAR?!? Isn't that the antithesis of James Dean? Corporate greed is really getting out of hand . . . <sigh>

James Dean deserves better.

James Dean loved racing. Real racing. Period. I'm so sure if he was alive today he would be in F1 or IRL.

Nascar is marketing hype. If I see a pic of Dean on a NASCRAP car, I would have to buy a 1/64th, just because it's James Dean.

Nothing is holy anymore. Thank god they still make Miller High Life. Pretty soon dog food will be a nascrap sponsor. It's what the fans eat.

Dont get me wrong, I used to LOVE oval racing, Parnelli Jones, Bobby and Davey Allison, and my fav- AJ Foyt. These guys drove cars- REAL cars. Nascar is so far from the sponsoring team/ car its rediculous.
Like Bill Elliott could do 200 mph in a REAL Dodge Intrepid. Or a Taurus could do over 120 with a tailwind.

Sheesh. Rant over.

The sight of his crash is about a couple of hours away from me. (He was heading to my neck of the woods when he crashed) I'm thinking about going to have a look-see and pay homage. I probably won't take the P-car, though.

I'm not sure how safe I would feel in a racecar with James Dean emblazoned on it

I dont like the fact that theyve slowed NASCARs down big time in the last 15 years. Bill Elliott used to do 215mph down the straights, now the cars are doing 190mph. They say its because of safety concerns. Bull****. If it was safety concerns you wouldnt drive over 115mph. Racing by itsa very definition is a sport that straddles safety as an afterthought to the danger. Its like saying skydiving isnt dangerous. Sure, its not dangerous if your chute opens. Vaccuuming is not dangerous. If the bag blows up, you have a dirty living room. But you arent dead.

The whole point to racing I thought was to go as fast as you possibly can. Indy Cars used to run 240mph lap times.

Ever since they started watering down the cars, removing turbochargers, displacement, adding restrictor plates, I stopped watching.

Its like watching a skydiving competition inside one of those friggin NASA parabola planes.
