Default Tires for a Newbie

Well, I did it. I bought the 84 944 today. WOO HOOO! Now I have to start checking off the repair/replacement list. I'm planning to start with tires. The car has Pirelli's that have maybe one season left on them. I've never owned Pirelli's, but these seem pretty loud. I have Michelin RainX on my 356 and like them. What recommendations do you guys have for the 944? I want something quiet but with good performance; not racing performance or very high dollar tires. Just some reliable rubber that will keep me on the road during the occasional romp through the twisty turnies. Over 90% of my driving will be on the highway.

There is a ton of info in the archives as tires is a popular discussion.

For a reasonable cost and capable performance for a street mostly car, tires such as the Yokohama AVS es100, Kumho MX, Kumho excsta 712 (not recomended if you see rain, snow, or the track), Fuzion ZRi are a popular newcomer, Sumitomo HTRZ II are all acceptable.

I recommend reading through your choices at Tire Rack as they are very detailed in their testing.

I love the Bridgestone S03s and the Michelin Pilot Sports, but those are both somewhat pricey. Quiet on the highway though and amazing wet performance! They seem to be lasting pretty well too. (i have a set of each on two cars)

S03's are great tires, but cost too much
Yokohamma's tend to wear too fast for my liking, and are a little soft on the sidewall
Kuhmos are the way to go in my opinion for a street car.
but yes, this has been beaten to death, please use the search!

I have Yoko AVS ES100s on the rear of my 951 and they seem to be great, excellent wet traction, seeing as we've had a couple rainy days here lately. No complaints from me on these tires, and they were reasonably priced, too!

I have been paged

Search is your friend, but seriously...
Kuhmos are the way to go in my opinion for a street car.
Kumho's on a Porsche is like wearing a Folex with an Armani suit.

There are lots of good tires out there. How about you tell us what you expect out of them. Max performance, bargain basement price, longevity, etc. Rank your 3 most important factors and the size wheels in case they arent stock.

I am happy to cover the question, I really like doing so. But to help you I need to know if you are using the 15" stock wheels and what your priorities are. If I assume that you are using the stock wheels I really like the Potenza G-009 in the stock 215/60R15, they run 64 bucks each at Tire Rack or let me know where you are located and I might be able to get you a better deal at one of my stores.

Fuzion Zri...no question about it.

As for the es100...

If tires were located under the oil filter housing, youd be in luck. As you'd be able to change both simulaneously and not worry about spilling oil on your tires.

Utter **** in the wear department. I still love them anyhow...

I've read about 30 pages worth of archives and did the Tire Rack research and it looks like the Bridgestone Potenza G009's fit the bill. I live in southwestern Wisconsin, so will be dealing with some snow. Not much though. The trucks are out putting salt on the road within minutes of the first flake hitting the ground. Getting out of my driveway and to the end of the block is the biggest challenge. For the last few years, I've had to drive in snow only two or three times a year. If it gets too bad, I'll buy a set of cheap snow tires. So what do you think of the Potenzas?

Pete did not like the Kumho Supras that I BBQ'd at the track. Understandable.

It depends on your driving style, conditions you expect and your purpose for them.

I run all season Eagle LS's. But I drive year round in all weather.
