Looked at a 928 today
It was an '86 S, black and super clean at a dealer where they sell old Vettes, hot rods, and other unusual stuff. The guy opened the hood and yeah, the engine looked big and really nice but how in the world do people work on those things? Even changing the spark plugs looked like it'd be a huge pain! Maybe you get at everything from below, but I can't imagine getting tools down there.

Heh, yeah the car was nice but overpriced I think. The sticker said $27,500. I'm not sure how many miles were on it but the guy said that the belts were just changed out and that was a 1 owner, Texas car with no rust. I was amazed, the dash had no cracks. It's the first one I've been able to look at up close.
Don't get me wrong, they look awesome. But I couldn't imagine trying to do something like a head gasket job in there. And then you get to do it again on the other head. I've browsed the 928 board every now and then and I could've sworn somebody saying that there was more room to work on stuff in the engine than on a 944.

Well, 928 owners can be biased. I believe that it is impossible to do the head gaskets with the engine in the car on the 32 valve engines.
But o man do those car go, they are like cruise missiles, can go for hours over 200 km/h and they just go. I had my 928 GT up to 295 km/h on the analog speedo, 286 on the digital. And it did pretty well in the slalom events as well, it is one amazing car.

They're gorgeous but from everything I've heard the maintenance (even if you DIY) will absolutely kill you. Parts ain't cheap, labor is absolutely nuts. I guess if you like working on a 951, you'd love one of those.

The 28's are just smokin hot. The next best thing to a CGT.
The engine bay is as tight as the 951's, electrical out the bazoo, a bad belt on a S4 can be a nightmare, but the power to weight ratio rivals today's Vetts. The cockpit is pure real estate, spacious and sprawling!!!
An excellent late model S4 should go for about $27k, your's, a little less.

$27.4k for a 1986 928S? That’s a steal all right … by the dealer if he gets that kind of money for it. Half that is still a good price to pay.
I once had a 1984 (BJ) 928S Euro with 310 HP and it certainly was a very impressive car with an effortless power delivery. My only two complaints were/are bad space utilization (small inside, relative to outside dimensions) and very harsh suspension (every concrete road joint got slammed through the cabin).
