Default Loud bang under hood, while my head was right there... tech question...

I'm trying to figure out of my battery is getting a charge. I'm under the hood with the engine running, and revved it up a bit with the throttle. A very very loud BANG(!!!) was heard right around the air filter. The car continued to run until I could turn it off. I started it shortly after and it started normal.

Was this a backfire or is this detonation? If so... what is the "normal" or frequent cause of this on the 968 (engine)?

Thanks,
Matt

i've had my car backfire through the intake before.
I thought detonation was more like popcorn or a slight bang.
did you see smoke?

it blew my j-boot off..LOL!

If it is backfire, what is the fix? If it's detonation, probably my FPR?

No smoke noticed.

I've had my 944 backfire once, while revving under the hood by hand as well - I just wrote it off to a "who knows?" since I know the car's in perfect mechanical shape.

Sounds like a back fire threw the intake, It has happened to me in my 924S while I was tuning the MAF setup. You might be running a little rich, or if you where free revving it up and down and up and down you might have loaded it up with fuel and POP. But as long as its ok now, I would just keep a eye on it.

When i first read the title the comment "hood shocks shot" jumped into my head.

Sorry, had to do it. probably not a problem. I go with the flooding theory.

So what I'm hearing is that it's probably OK just got a little rich? I wish I was rich. So nothing to worry about for now?

Tom, funny - actually my hood shocks are wearing down as I leave the hood up alot in the garage as I'm working on it. And you might guess it's been worked on a lot.
