if you have a 944, you know what the 17mm wrench is for. If you need it I will give it to you in return for help with Nero Burning software. PM me if interested.

Out of curiosity, what's it good for besides changing the transaxle oil?

On a 944, the transaxle plugs only.

I bought a 1/2" socket 17mm allen bit, it was $21CDN, and the thing weighs about 5lbs, it's insane, but it's invincible!

Isn't the oil drain plug on the VW flat fours a 17mm allen?? I have one left over from "those days".

Snap-On makes one listed as a VW trannie socket. It is shallower than your average 17mm and has edges that seam to fit in the transaxel bots on my 928 better than a standard 17mm allen. It was less than $20.
