Question Autocross tire suggestions

With the next autocross season coming up in the next few months, its about time to get ready and buy new tires. I just got an extra set of cookie cutters and wanted to know what is the best size/kind of tire for autocrossing.

225/50/15 is the size to use. There are lots of tires you can use...R compound would be best if its a set of wheels solely for autox. Toyo ra-1, kumho v700, 710; yokohama a032r....the list goes on. Just get the cheapest R compound you find.

Yeah, all the R-compound tyres are within a second or two of each other on an autocross course. All of them are about 5-10 seconds faster than street tyres. The tyres will make a bigger difference than all suspension mods combined (aside from alignment).

Kumho Victoracers are about the best for the money. They are forgiving and will last . Put the widest tire you can fit on the wheels.
The 944 tends to understeer in the slow tight turns of an autox.
So the widest front tire you can fit would help.

I'm assuming the tires are for strictly autocrossing, not for street?

I've always loved my Yokohamas, and I'm running a 225/50 15 on cookie cutters. Right now, it's kind of a street car too, so I do have yoko ES100s. You'll want something more sticky for a track, but I'd stick with one of the cheaper brands (one reason I love Yoks)

HAHA, yes that is SOOOOO true! Learned that the hard way! My first few autocrosses were on wide open fast tracks. The first time i had a super tight hairpin course i had a major lesson in the effects of super late braking / being too hot in slow turns.

Thank goodness for painters tape!

Yes the tires will be strictly for autocrossing. I bought an extra set of wheels off ebay for a great price so now I can use the cookie cutters for autocrossing.

what effect have you guys had with same size wheel width, ie, 15x8 on all corners or 16x8?

i have 16x7 and 16x8, which definitely understeers, but i'm thinking 16x8 would help that a bit.

want more oversteer?, run bigger tires on the front! I have never had a problem with oversteer/understeer with my 944, with the right koni settings, and adjustments in tire pressures, I can make it do whatever i want... I use same size all around....
but seriously to make it oversteer, just run the wider tires on the front...

I'm going to try 928 7-slot 16X8 (sewer lids) on all four corners this year with 245/45/16 fuzion tires. This will be on the old red n/a 944. I decided on this for the exact reason stated, but I really am a rookie to autocross so I'm basing my starting point on what others have suggested.

The setup you're thinking of is, IMHO, the near PERFECT tire/wheel setup for the 944, for both autox and for DE's.

Lawn Gnome: How much autox experience do you have? That plays a big role in what kinda tires I'd recommend for you...

I'm going to run the rear wheels from my two sets of clubsports.
16x9 front and rear. I'm hoping this will give me less understeer.
Has anyone run a 265 16 in the rear?
