Can a chip make a car run poorly after awhile?
I purchased a AutoThority computer chip for my car a little over a month ago. I immediately installed it and raved about what I both perceived and measured (G-tech pro comp) as reasonable gains.
BUT after a few weeks I felt that performance had fell and my car seemed to be "missing" occasionally. I was at the end of a tank of gas, so I thought maybe I had some bad gas... Replaced it with the best stuff 91 octane I could fine... no improvement.
I also removed the intake system that I had made and put the stock airbox back in, no better. I spent two days trying to figure out what the problem was, then decided to put the stock chip back in and take it in to my mechanic...
As soon as I put the old (original) chip back in, drove the car for about ten miles and got back home... The car ran great, idles great (had been idling poorly also).
The car runs better now that I think it has at any time since Ive owned it...
Any explenations??? Im open to suggestions!
Thanks,
Terry

i've never had any problems with any chips that i installed in any of my three 944s (including a turbo). but your symptoms certainly suggest the chip was the cause of the problem.

It may have simply accelerated an already taxed components failure.
The car didnt repair itself when it got unchipped, the problem was just not as noticeable.
A chip is going to reveal damage to something more than the stock chip will.

The component is not repaired just less stressed.
(After years of use there are plenty of components that are no longer within spec (when was the last time you drove a 44 fresh off the assembly line
Chips allow you to push harder and invite you to do the same.

Well, in any event... its going in tomorrow for its 1k mile retension on the new belts. Maybe they will have some input sa to what the situration is.
By the way, my techs. are pretty good, but for MY knowlede, besides retensioning the belts, is there anything else I should ask to have done while they are in there?
