Default PCNA Offers Legal Parts Catalogue on CD

Note: I do not want discussion of illegal or bootleg versions of PET and that the moderator said that any mention of such will be deleted from the thread.
...............................
That said, here's the scoop...
....................................

PCNA, in its infinite wisdom, has finally offered a parts catalog in electronic format that does not require parts researchers to resort to break copyright law by purchasing bootleg copies of their PET program.

The CD is called "Porsche Genuine Parts Catalogue - PDF-Format" and lists for about $12 at their dealers in the USA.

The part number to order is 000.043.400.05

You will need a Windows machine and a free Adobe Acrobat Reader. This CD is not readable on a Macintosh or Unix machine.

Tell your parts guy that George B. sent you.

It covers every street Porsche from 356 to Carrera GT, and is supposed to be current through August 2004.

DAMMIT PETE!
You closed my thread before I got an anwser. I was not fishing for free files, i just would like to BUY or make a PET application or docs I can use on a Mac platform.

Yes---I know the PET is interactive and YES, I know it would be cumbersome to do as a pdf. It seems it stands now that unless I have a Windows based system, the PET is a no go for me.
George, if the dealer sells it as a .pdf file, then why, pretel, does it not read on a Mac OS when .pdf files are Adobe, not Windows based?
PET is a great tool and one I would be happy to purchase, but it's not worth the price of a new computer system as well. I just was hoping to find out my options.

If it isnt a searchable database what good is it? It sounds like they just scanned the microfiche and converted it to pdf.

Ah, but the pdf files are searchable. You can search on a string (e.g. 944 107) and it will go to the next occurrence of the thing. I believe that they actually outputted the PET screens to a pdf writer, keeping the illustrations and the text together...

The reason that the cd will not work on a Mac is that Mac (and Unix, for that matter) use a different directory structure than windows.

As to why PCNA did it that way, you'll have to ask them, I don't work for them and they didn't ask my opinion...

Like I say, buy a legal one from Porsche and copy the files from a windows machine to a Mac machine and bob's your uncle...

I've been using this legal PDF version for about 4 months now (got it right after release) and it's really great. Far easier on the system than the bootleg PET, and all the same info is there, just as easy to find.

Highly recommended!

Thanks GB!!!!!!!!

For 12 bones it's worth the chance to experiment and maybe get what I need out of it. Again, I was not fishing for freebies or links, but for something that will work.

Thanks again for all the help!!!!

PS--Matt, I personally would give up the searchable funtion to be able to just have something with the data on it I need and can read. I have a Miata factory fische database that is in pdf format. Is it a bitch to read, YES! Is it time consuming, YES. But given all that, I can still find what I need faster than Dirk Diggler and his "goon squad " in the parts dept at Mazda. I think of .pdf's as halfway between digital and analog. Great, no, but they are better than a blank screen.
YMMV!

Has anyone been able to find this? The only place I've seen it for sale is at Rennbay, and they're out of stock. My local Porsche dealer (Bill Cook Porsche in Farmington Hills MI) acted like I was smoking crack when I asked about it. I need two copies. Any pointers????

Yeah, the P-Car dealers dont want us to have them (I dont understand why not)... It would seem to me that if we call in with a part number, it would make their jobs easier!

Ok, here is the REAL scoop. They were given out by the Porsche reps to the big reseller accounts. It was so people like Pelican Parts, Vertex, Paragon etc.. could have the same info that the Porsche dealers had. They will not be produced again. It was a single run and they were not supposed to be for sale.
I got a batch of the ones I had from one of the big "reseller" accounts to resell myself. Only after all the ones I had were gone was I told what they were really for. I hope everyone who needed one got one from those who were selling them. I believe everyone is out of them now and no more will be made.
