Interesting thread!
I never realized how fast the 928S was/is, 0-60! Wow.
To say Ferrari's "suck" because they break when you run em hard is like saying a Formula1 or Indy car sucks! They get stripped and re-built after every run, but don't suck! Ferrari's are made for people who don't mind paying for a complete rebuild every 30k or so.
I think it goes without saying that anyone who COULD throw way more money into a "toy" sports car other than a 944, would. I happen to like the 944's looks - ever since they came out. But if you front me 30k, I'd be glad to buy myself a late 80's, early 90's 911!
But take a look at the nice red 951 in Tampabay's avatar. Sweet, cheap (relatively), and no slouch on the track! Bang for the buck in super sports car terms, IMHO!

That FerrariChat thread is interesting. They seem to put a premium on hitting 100,000 miles in a Ferrari as big-time. I think its unfair to compare a Ferrari to a 944 series because you could have brought two 944s for one low-end 308/328. But if you compared a 3.2 Carrera which was competing against the 308/328, you will be hard-pressed to find a 3.2 UNDER 100,000 miles anymore. Many are pushing 200K miles or over. And if you take a step back and look at the 911 SCs, over 200,000 miles is certainly nothing to brag about.
I also find it interesting that as much more reliable a 3.2 Carrera is, its also pound for pound a better performance car than the 308/328 series. I dont think people realize how quick the 3.2 Carreras are without a turbo. They will do 0-60 in right about 6 seconds and run at 150mph all day and twice on Sundays. Without looking I assume the 911 Turbo was priced a bit more than the 308/328, but at that point, the performance comparison is not even worth discussing. I concede a 328 is probably easier to drive well than any 911, but caveat that by saying a well groomed 911 driver can do serious damage to the cars that are easier to drive.
So today, you can spend $38,000 on a 65K mile 328 GTS thats had two engine rebuilds and by all accounts is in excellent shape but costs an arm and a leg to maintain and has good but not great performance and looks a lot faster than it really is (granted it DOES look good). Or you can spend $38,000 and get a 75K mile well-maintained 964 Turbo that will wrip the friggin sheets off the 328, cost half as much to own, run twice as long, be reliable enough to drive from Chicago to Cleveland without having someone provide a soft tow (spotter), and still be tame enough to drive to the supermarket and have enough room for a few bags of groceries.

Hi everyone, Ferraris are actually very reliable cars. They must be driven often to avoid gremlins and such. I have been driving my 308 for the past two months everyday while my 951S is having major work done to it (rebuilt gearbox, oil leaks, and of course a K-29 turbo installed). The Ferrari is BY FAR the most reliable of all my cars now. You guys don't see a lot of 100k plus mileage, because there are few people who drive them daily. I know many people who drive them everyday. For instance, a good friend has a daily driver Testarossa with almost 60,000 miles on it. Another friend had two 308s, both were sold with WELL over 100,000 miles. Now the same fellow daily drives his 512TR and it has about 70,000 miles on it now. I have 56,000 miles on my 308 GTS QV, and it has been trouble free, except for a battery and a throttle cable. No kidding, the car is amazingly reliable, starts every time, even this morning when it was 19 degrees! After I get the 944 back this week, I will have spent over $5000 on it, in 8 months of ownership. I have not spent half that much on the Ferrari, and I have owned it for 4 years!
Yes, the 944 will smite the 308 without batting an eye during acceleration. But I did not buy the 308 for all speed. The 308 is a fantastic driving car, I have a Tubi on the car and it sounds absolutely amazing. It rides superb, looks terrific and handles very well. I invite anyone to come by for a spirited ride in the Ferrari, I promise you will love it!

If the house was built I'd seriously put a bid on this car. So close too....be a nice retirement gift for the old man!

No, I was just trying to ruffle people's feathers here. I'm actually a pretty big Ferrari fan, especially when it comes to their racing heritage. Believe it or not though, those numbers were actually all from magazine tests. If you google "performance car database" you should be able to find the website I got them from. So what if I didn't choose to pick the faster cars.
No, I do like Ferraris. One of the best rides I got in a street car was in a 512TR. If by some twist of fate I have the chance to get a Ferrari in the future, it'd be a 512TR, I love that car. Granted, the maintenance of pre-355 Ferrari's nearly made me soil myself when I was back at the old shop, I still have a soft place in my heart for them. That's why I dyed my hair bright red for the 2003 US GP, still wear my Ferrari hat, and still cheer on my favorite team from Italy

By the way, back on the subject of ruffling feathers... one of our fellow Rennlisters actually learned how to drive stick on a 308. I verbally abused him for at least a month upon learning that. Myself? I learned on a d*mned Forf Festiva that randomly lost gear usage!
"Up... looks like 1st isn't working today, start off in 2nd, Kevin."
The funniest part, that's actually not an exageration... I remember him saying that!

I competed against a 79' 308 last July in a 7/4 car show and talked to the owner for a good hour and his story seemed to go in a different direction than yours. When I walked away I felt like I was driving a Honda. Who knows.
