my ground (IIRC) goes from the battery to the chassis then I have another cable that goes from the chassis to the bellhousing. Is there a way to test the connection??? With say a voltmeter or ommeter??? Thanks

You could clip an alligator clip to the bellhousing, run a wire from the clip to the ohmmeter, and place the other ohmmeter probe on the negative battery cable, right at the battery terminal. This should give you an almost zero reading.
While you may have the cables bolted up, they could be broken internally, or the connections points could be corroded or painted over.
