Default $50 fix didn't work, now what?

Well, I have a loose shifter. I ordered the shift rod, spring washer, and lower bushing and installed them today. However, I STILL have a loosey-goosey shifter. *sigh* It seems that the linkage between the shift rod and whatever that thing attaches to is the culprit. Can I tighten that up w/o ripping up my car or dropping the tranny? Do I have to purchase yet more parts?

I had to take my tranny out when I bought my car...The linkage on top of the tranny is where I would guess your problems are coming from...its somewhat accesible with the trans in the car, but I haven't tried to replace those parts, so I don't know if you would have room to work on it. I would try jacking the car up in back and seeing how much room you have, or see what others have to say as well.

The linkage (long black rod) can also wear too. It will need to be fixed/or replaced.

There are two bolts that control the "tightness." One is located on the side of the tranny very close to the top and the other is located on the top. Both are accessible without removing anything - just jack the car up for room.
One bolt controls front/back motion, the other controls side/side. My shifter was to the point that I was afraid I couldn't get it in gear. Then I saw a pic posted by Perry 951 showing the two spots. I wish I had the pic for you. Anyway, I could actually finger-tighten my bolt, it was so loose.

HTH.

You have two methods for getting a proper lever to shift rod connection:

1) Use clear silicon
2) Get yourself some gear lever bushing from early 924 models, want the part number?

hosrom - sure, I'll order the part and install it. If nothing else, it will be Prev. Maint.

I'm having the same problem, it feels like there is NO spring tention keeping the lever in the 3rd/4th position. I can put it behind first and itll stay. I will be keeping an eye on this thread for my own problem

Anyone know where the bolts for tightening this are on the tranny? I need to do this, good project for the weekend, while the car is being stored for the winter...

I have slight play in all directions on my shifter also. I checked the shift rod which dosent seem to be the culprit. The play is very small, maybe .25-.5 of an inch. But its enough that it makes me want to figure out why its doing it. I am thinking it has something to do with the linkage on the tranny as stated above.

The thread showing the two bolts was here, but the pictures dont seem too work anymore. You can see the bolts which need tightening just as well in the first picture for the 944Racing shortshifter.

I have not bothered to check those bolts yet. I ordered the short shifter from 944Racing and it should be here tomorrow. Hopefully it tightens everything up. Its supposed to rain tomorrow, but i will likley end up installing it anyway.
