I finally decided to break down and buy a new DME relay and keep the old one as a spare. The dealer told me the old part has been superseded by the same relay for a 993, an improved design. I plugged it in and the car runs fine. $42 incl. tax. Anybody else heard of this??

I think Beab951 was working on a solid-state transistor-based version. No mechanical moving parts to wear out. Problem he had was finding the base for the unit. Basically he's gotta sacrifce a DME relay to make one....
