FWIW: When I took delivery of my '84 twenty years ago, it came from the factory with Dunlaps.

A guy that I know has an extremely low mile 88 Turbo S that still has the original tires on it. Goodyear Gatorbacks.

I know of Dunlop and Pirelli for sure. My '86 944 NA (now long gone) came with Pirellli P600's. My 951 came with Pirelli P700Z's.

It depends on what years. Pirelli P6s and P7s I believe were used in the 86-87 years.

Best to check old road test magazine articles. Usually the test cars have the OEM supplied rubber on them and the info is often stated somewhere in the article.

I guess they used the flavor of the day! It's like getting Ford oil put in your car at the dealer. "and the winner is.... ''

Manufacturers generally have more than one stock tire. They might have one foreach of the following:
Summer option cars (say, sold in Texas)
Winter option cars (say, sold in Minnesota), might come with an M&S tire or A/S tire
Various wheel options (both wheel size and wheel specific)
Various trim levels
Some will allow special ordering

944s came with:
Dunlop (various)
Pirelli (P6 & P7, P600Z, P700Z among others)
Goodyear ("Gatorbacks" which are actuall called Eagle VR50, ZR45, etc depends on the Speed Rating and Aspect Ratio)
I am sure they came with others

On a side note Dunlap is a lot of things but a tire is not one of them. DunLOP is the tire company (now owned by Goodyear). Only annoys me because it is a proper name. Kind of like if your name was Mike and I called you Matt.

My 88's got Yoko av/db's and I was looking at them having 2 wide grooves but yet ,not too much tread spacing and figured a good chance to hydroplane in the wet. Would like a good wet/dry, not m&s tire. Preferrably, original supplier to try to maintain some originallity. I have the NA i'm gonna try things with.

Actually, they have been in that business for a while. Like most other rubber companies they are very diverse. Dont be shocked if you see another rubber company with a whole lot of high profile golf equipment this year (i.e. you WILL see it).

For some reason sporting goods tie right in. After seeing gold ***** be made I can tell you that it is TOO different than tires. Scary how much work goes into making a golf ball.

Trojan irons and wedges?

For the man who likes to lay it pin high!!

You are right on the diversification. Goodyear manufactures tires and blimps.

For example, Firestone makes:
Roofing Products
Chemicals
Air Bags for Motorhomes (nearly all of them)
Tires for everything from your 4 wheeler to the world largest Implement carrying a tire so big that a 6' tall man can stand in it and you cant see his head
Suspension parts for Subaru's (complete airbag setup for your WRX, pretty cool, called Praxxis)

ETC.

Tire companies make a lot of stuff beyond tires.

Mine had Pirelli P6's 195/65 15's/. Stiil wore them when I got it. They were ragged..
