What is the Lifespan of an Oil Pump Seal?
Hey Guys: finally had the bad oil leak on my S2 diagnosed by an expert. The verdict was that the Oil pump needs to be resealed.
This was surprising, because I checked the PO's records, and my car had the same work done in 2002. My question is, how long should I expect this seal to last? Right now, Oil is leaking at a good rate (we cleaned the underside, then put the car on lifts with the engine running and immediately saw oil leaking).
Since this isn't a cheap repair effort (labor rates are killer), I wanted to see if you guys knew how long the new seals should hold... or if I'm going to have to go thru this again in 2 years???
Many thanks, Chase...

Well, let's put it this way. The factory installed seal lasted 13 years before the last repair. Something seems amiss there with the last effort, IMHO.

Check the PO's records and see if the crank was removed at any time. If the girdle that holds the crank to the block was not installed correctly, ie. the girdle is not flush with the front face of the block where the oil pump is mounted then there may be a gap that won't seal properly. Or check this area once your mechanic has the oil pump off.

Thanks guys. I am due to see what the heck happened this afternoon and will keep you all posted. I just hope the PO's records are incorrect (perhaps the computer category listed was for the front engine seal.. who knows...)

Is it leaking at the seal or the oil pump housing? Is he saying to replace the oil pump itself or just the seal? The seal is easy, the oil pump is not.
The seal should last for years. Many shops do not replace the sleeve that the seal rides on. This sleeve can develope a groove and kill a new seal in a very short time. This is likely what happened.

Hey Guys, ended up having to replace the oil pan gasket, reseal everything, add oil, put on a new belt (cause it looked weak from the leaks)... after all was said and done, my wallet is incredibly light now.... like no Christmas until 2010... ugh. On the bright side, the S2 is up and running again...
Question: how long does it take to do that job DIY? (provided you have your own engine hoist)
