Default Engine Hoist for Oil Pan Gasket removal

What have you all used to hold the engine off of the crossmember to allow access to the oil pan? I do not have the facilites to remove the engine nor room to accomodate a stand alone engine hoist. Does anyone know of a self made option or something from Autozone? I have seen a couple made out of wood....not really something I trust holding an engine over my head. Any suggestions?

Check out the tech articles on Paragon. there is an article about how to change the rod bearings with the engine in the car, it tells you how to make a wooden frame that will support the engine so this is possible. it's a good thing.

That is the wooden one I saw before. Is that sturdy enough?

I don't remember where this pic came from, but looks easy enough to make, and will surely hold that engine just fine.

Yeah, surprisingly enough, our engines weigh ONLY 300 lbs or so...

I made a similar one out of two 2x4's on edge. It was plenty strong enough; which is good as I spent several hours under the engine changing the rod bearings, pan gasket and all the "while I was in there" crap. I just used the front engine support eye. The rear of the engine is supported by the torque tube.

I made a 4x4 frame when I changed my rod bearings. I also placed an extra set of jackstands beneath the bellhousing and the front pullies for an added safety factor.

So the masses have spoken. 4x4's it is. Ahofam123, I will take you bit of caution to heart, a jack stand to the bell housing and up front it is. Wish me luck.....if you do not hear from me in two days, send woodchucks!!!

I always keep a cell phone within reach when I'm under the car... If the worst happens (God forbid), I can (hopefully) grab it and dial 911. Maybe one of those senior-citizen alarm remotes would be a good idea for us gearheads... "Life Alert? Help! My car's fallen and I can't get up!"

Hahaha...I can't stop thinking about Family Guy.

"Hello...911? Yeah, it's Quagmire.. Yep, in a window this time."

the Rennlist Version
"Hello, 911? Yeah, It's Porschephile.. Under a brake rotor this time."
