I suppose you could always buy the VW part that is supposed to be used for this task, it isnt that expensive and when pulling a motor it will be invaluable. You could probably rent it to your friends and make back the cost

I had my engine held up for a couple weeks as I did my rod bearings with a 2x4 contraption. I'm out in Herndon VA, so you're free to borrow it if you want. Let me know if you want to use it and I'll hunt around for it.

I appreciate the offer but I think I will go ahead and build one. I will definatly use it again and I am not sure how long it will be up.

I think I saw you last week. You were heading North on 28 then taking the Dulles Airport/Tollroad exit.

Yup, that was probably me. I'm on 28 pretty much every day.
Good luck with the oil pan though. That was by far my least favorite thing I've done to my car. If you need help with it, I may be able to lend a hand.

I just noticed something this evening, the rear hook eye for the engine is attached to the cam cover. Would it put too much stress on the drive shaft to only rely on the front hook to hold the engin in place with the cross member out of the way? I was hoping to take off the cam and cylinder head but if I cannot hold the engine, it is going to be one or the other...for now.

You can hold it by just the front loop...

Hey, Those Wooden supports seem pretty clever. I am going to build one for my oil pan gasket change next week. I just ordered the whole MYSWISS kit. Retainers, gasket, and new bolts!
Should be fun!
