Default speed limit ???

Do you really have to be very careful about speed limits??

To the rest of the world it seems that you americans are heavily under scrutiny on your vehicles speed.

In my country excepting the main speedways and cities you can really fly

In one of our meetings this year some of the new 996 and 996 turbo where doing 290-300 kms/h in the highways and police didn't even bother to catch them.

yes, in the US you have to be neurotic about watching your speed to avoid a police encounter. A friend of mine was pulled over several months ago for going 40mph in a 40mph zone.... because the cop still thought he was in a 35mph zone. Sad part is, 5mph is within the margin of error on some speedometers. Its a revenue thing, not a safety concern.

It can also depend on what kind of car you drive. My wife drives a black crown vic and she might as well be invisible, me on the other hand in a sports car better not be speeding.

"Its a revenue thing, not a safety concern."

Exactly! If safety was really the goal, cops would be patroling city streets where the majority of accidents and traffic deaths occur. Particularly intersections where 75% of traffic fatalities occur...

At least cops can use their discretion - over here they have been replaced by thousands of idiotic speed cameras. As little as 5mph over the limit and you get fined £60 (~$100) and 3 points on your licence.

Accumulate 12 points and you get a ban

The police go after low to moderate speeders in my experiences. I have been stopped for doing 75 in a 55 for example. I have blown by officers [when I am unaware or their presence] at 140 from time to time and they don't bother to pursue. I'm not saying it is smart, but it happened. Just my $.02

It's definately the type of car you drive and the cops mood. My buddies who drive Honda's and other Japanese cars get pulled over all the time for being just the slightest bit over the speed limit and then once pulled they get numerous other tickets for other idiotic things. When I was driving my 924 I would blow by cops speeding like crazy and they would never bother me.
