My suggestion would be to let the market dictate. The two are similiar enough that I would let price, condition, and location dictate. Keep an open mind and try to look at alot of cars. Only then will you know and appreciate what you are looking at.

I don't know about the rear brakes on a 924S, they may be drums. Could someone with one answer this? That would be a determining factor to me, for some stupid reason.
Either way, you win!

There is nothing mechanically special about the 924S. All of the mechanical bits and most interior parts came from a the 944. Either an earlier model or the current year model. Only 924S Specific thing I know of are the white letter gauges vs 944 yellow number gauges, the narrow fenders and 15x6 phone dials.

For what its worth, the 924S and 944 got a slight power bump to 158 HP in 1988 due to a compression ratio increase from 9.5:1 to 10.2:1 and revised ignition timing. Some 1988 924S's also came stock with M030 suspension. There were fewer 924S built in 1988 than '87, but i have always thought that an '88 with M030 would be a nice model to have.

the 924S is faster than the 944, because of aerodynamics, and weight. it is lighter. It does handle about the same, if not better.
However, if you're up against a good driver, that doesn't mean SQUAT! I have a 924S, and one of my track buddies who drives a 944 in need of an engine rebuild beats me all the damn time...She pisses me off soooooooooo much...
but yeah. go with the 924S if you like the skinny girls...compared to the 944's FAT *** it's almost anorexic...

There was also a SE 924S produced in 1988 that had manual windows and a sport suspension as well as some other goodies. It was often referred to as the "Le Mans" edition. You'll have a hard time finding one of these left that hasn't seen track time/been modified.

you can run late offset larger wheels/ wider wheels on the 924s w/ very little effort and they tuck right in. I even run my 89 15"x7" phones w/ slicks on my 924s...

Excellent, 10 page article, with lots of specs.

So it's decision time. Which is the best? Neglecting price, the 944 Turbo was the consensus favorite. Althought it feels a bit of a lump around town, it is very, very fast when driven aggressively at high speeds. From there, opinions differed: all remaining cars tied in scoring. The 944S offers may Turbo features at a lower price. The 944 has good performance with a nice, modern interior design. The 944S has near-944 performance at a lower price, if you can live with the seating position, dated interior design and in-effective air conditioning.
On a price dependent basis, the 924S was the car of choice for most staffers. The 944 Turbo and regular 944 were about equal for secon choice, the Turbo offered an entirely different level of performance that out wieghed the price, the 944 interior and price making it a good compromise. The 944S was condsidered to be the least cost-effective.
I'll try to scan tomorrow, but I'm not that proficient.
Good luck!
