The vin will not tell you anything about options. I copied this from another post:

First 3 letters are the world manufacturing code.
Next 3 are country code. AA0 is USA
Next 2 digits are first and second digits of vehicle type.
Next single letter is a test digit or filling character.?...
Next letter is the model year. F=1985, G=1986, H=1987, J=1988, K=1989, L=1990 and M=1991.
Next letter is factory of manufacturing
Next digit is the third digit of model type.
Next single digit is for body or engine,
Final series are the serial number.

If the car is an S and the repair work was done well it could be a good find for someone.
I just called him. It's not an "S". He seemed nice, I just hung up after finding it was a regular turbo. My brother wants a turbo S or an 89 951 to keep up with me. His 911 cab is a great looking car and all but he wants something with power, so if I find one for him he said he'll buy it. Would be cool to have matching cars!!!

86 Turbos have a 160mph speedo, 87-89s have a 180mph speedo.

Any preformance differances between a 86 and a 87-88-89 non S turbo? He just sent me a email saying he can take it in for a PPI wednesday and leave it over night. Im calling the dealer to set up a appointment. He is also going to take a picture of the speedo cluster, option code sticker and some more from the interior and exterior. Ill post those as soon as i get them. Im starting to fell a little better about the car, he seems like a honest guy. I pulled the carfax and its clean.

FYI if you want to remove that lightbar, you will have to weld 4 holes closed where the original license plate used to be and at least 2 other holes on the bumper, fill, sand, and repaint. in my old car, one of those holes was right next to the option code sticker and i was debating on getting them welded, but in doing so, that sticker would probably have been roasted.

i would not purchase a car with the lightbar unless i really wanted to keep it on there. if you plan on removing it and restoring the license plate to the original location, i think you're better off buying a car that is stock in that respect. i'm not a welding expert, but i would think that rear firewall would warp when welded. in any case, it's gonna cost some $$$ to fix it.

jyoon, i know a guy thats a bodyshop expert(painted my previous car). He took the rear pads of and filled the holes, sanded and panted. Looked like the car never had any rear bumper pads.
Ill have him take the light bar of and fix it to its original look, move the plate up between the tail lights and fix the bumper. I don't want to let this car go because its in great shape. Originally i wanted a red 951 but this one is to clean to pass up and the price is excellent. I got the PPI scheduled for wednesday and the shipping is going to be $900. If everything goes as planned it should be here between 12-30-04 - 1-2-05.

On the first pic especially, the plastic trim strips around the instrument panel, ignition, and interior controls looks brown instead of black. It looks as though they may have come from another car, they are identical to the ones in the brown interior of my 944.
