Yes..agreed with what Mike said above.

Here's a fun quote for support of Mike's statement:

"Cars are not Goiters. They should'nt have to grow on you"

that balck one sounds like when I bought my black one. The guy was also asking 9500 origionally. There is a turbo water pump, and many turbos have had em replaced, thats a normal issue. I saw the (?). it runs coolent through the thurbo for 30 seconds after shutdown, and more if the car was run hard. I really like the 87 over the 86. When you work on em side to side, you notice all the little (and big) differences. Good luck, we'll be waiting for that next upcoming "mod" thread

From here - that Red one looks extra clean! But then again that's from a tiny pic on a laptop at my office - might be a real dog in person. And we all know how rare the Guards Red 86's are!
In all - the Red one looks like it's been pampered. The Black one looks like it's ok - but I get the feeling it's last few years have been spent just sitting around. You know, like when you get something new and then put away something you had for a long time. The "old" one kinda becomes second fiddle.

To rebuild a K26/6 which is what will be in either car would be like $350. The labor to replace to turbo would also be pretty expensive. I am not sure what the book time is, but if the turbo has never been removed it can be horrible to get off. I would say anwhere from $700-$1000 for the whole thing.

You really need to get a PPI on the car before you buy it. It is even more important on a turbo because the replacement cost is higher on some of the turbo only stuff. There are tons of people out there with inexpensive turbo cars who have put 75% of what they bought the car for right back into it to make it perform anywhere near to factory condition.

I will definitely do a PPI on the any car i decide to go with. I will call a Porsche dealer in the area and ask the buyer to take it there. I assume the service department will call me with the results. I decided against the 86 and will go with a 87+. I am leaning towards red with black interior though. I have a black car right now and they look great when they are waxed but every little thing shows up(swirls, chips) more then most colors. And if i find a nice red car with great paint i am sure it will look as good waxed. Like i said i will do about 1-2 months of looking and will post any progress i have on the board and get you guys advice. Thanks for all the help so far.

Looking at prospective 951 cars, the biggest question for me would be if it's been modified (e.g., chipped, MAF, etc.)

There are some really neat modded cars, but personally, I would prefer to buy a car with stock configuration and take it from there myself, if need be.

I'm much more curious about the red one! White phone dial wheels and no sunroof. Does this not resemble a Rothmans turbo cup car? get an underhood shot of the red one for us... I'm curious what colour the intake manifold is...

I would go withthe 87 if the price can be lowed into the 7K range. That is alot for an 86 unless you want to have a garage queen.

Well, I dont think anyone mentioned a clutch. Make sure those are up to date because they are very expensive to replace.

I have pics of both cars. I have been looking for the past month or so. The owners of both sent me pics. The red one is definately in better condition, however I personally did not care for the white phone dials. I have tried to upload some jpeg pics of the red one but it says there is an error in uploading. I am sorry Im a newby.

i don't think anyone mentioned the auto-tensioner for the timing belt yet. the 86 doesn't have the 87's do.
