The lip on the inside of the cam belt tensioner pulley should stop the belt from moving toward the motor. Make sure that the correct tensioners are in their right locations, the bal belt tensioner has a lip on the outside. Is the new water pump an updated unit? If it is, did you have to modify the timing cover to fit it? If the cover is not modified correctly it can rub on the inside of the belt.

No it's just a rebuilt old-style water pump. I figured the car has been running with an old-style WP for 19 years with no problem (until now) so why update and add complication and maybe mess up somehow?

update: finals are coming up... i'll try to bleed it the right way. I dont think its the B belt, as that doesnt touch the WP. Also, all the rollers and tensioners are new, would one fail prematurely?

OK, update time. After finals, I worked on my mom's car, and now it's my car's turn. I got it running again today after some speed/ref sensor issues, and that belt noise is still there. I stuck a screwdriver to my ear, and to various points around the belts, and the noise (which is more like a whine than a whir, I realized) is MOST apparent at the Balance Shaft Belt non-toothed roller. I guess this means there is too much tension in the BS belt. If it ever stays sunny here in SF I will fix it, and drive it for a change. Also, I noticed I turned the BS tensioner roller the right way (clockwise) but the timing belt tensioner roller the WRONG way (clockwise). Why is this bad? It seems to be working... thanks everyone.

reading back, I saw theedge mention that when the belts are too tight it makes it sound "superchaged". What I have is a whining sound. Is that what superchargers sound like?

My neighbor answered my question for me - he noticed I "finally got that porsche running" so he came up to take a look. I pointed out the whining sound, then i revved the engine, and he looked impressed and he said "ooh, sounds like a supercharger!" so that settles that. The thing that confuses me is that according to the kriket tool, I at 38 lbs on the Timing Belt and like 26 lbs on the Balance Shaft Belt, so they're not too tight... What gives?
If I leave it how it is with this whining sound, will anything break or get damaged? I checked, and there is no belt rub anywhere (I even shimmed the timing belt tensioner roller 2mm with a washer to get it away from the back cover).

Ok, from what I've done and noticed after doing my own timing belts, the smooth balance belt roller is the cause of the whir. IIRC, the factory says "0.05 MM from the belt" with a feeler gauge. Whenever I did that, it was the supercharger whine type thing. so I took it up to 0.5 MM with a feeler gauge from the belt. worked perfectly, no whine, belts set to factory spec. try that first.

Thanks Porschephile, that really helps. I thought that the smooth roller was supposed to touch the belt and add to the tension. I'll try taking it back a bit, like .5mm away from the belt like you said. Would I turn it clockwise or counterclockwise?
